TO ALL WHOM'IT MAY OONGERN:

' Be it known that I, ROBERT LEAMAN, of Hillsborough, Highland county', in the State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Lounges; and I hereby declare that the following -is a tru'e, full, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the lettersof reference marked'v thereon. l

In the annexed drawings, which are maden part of this specification- Figure 1 represents a. side elevation of my lounge. l

Figure 2 is a plan view of the same, with the lounge folded 'back to a'vertical position.

The frame R, in which the lounge is placed, consists ofV the uprights A, strengthened bythe braces B and cap-piece O, the lower ends of said braces resting on sills, 0;, these sills being held irmly together at their end by the ties e. In order to give the lounge its proper elevation when placed in position, the support s is provided, and consists of a lateral bar, sustained at each endby a leg, n. E represents the lounge frame, consisting of the side rails g, bound together at their' lower ends by the foot-board` and near the head of the lounge by the cross-tie d. Outside of tie d, and parallel with it, is shaft 7c, .with the pulleyv m on it, the pulley being placed midway between the two side rails g. The side rails rest near their lower end on the bar L, the ends of which are rounded, and act as pivots, which play in holes made through the braces B. By means vof this bar thc lounge can be raised or lowered, as hereinafter described. It will be vobserved that-the side rails are jointed in two places; one set of joints being near the middle of the rails, and the other set near the footboard z. These joints are made by a vertical mortise out through the endfof one section of the rail g to receive the tenon formed on the adjoining section; the said'tenon being rounded at outer end so as to allow the mortised section to play with a vertical motion. Underneath the lounge frame is placed the shaft H, which works in holes cut through cleats P; the cleats being screwed to the bottom of the sections of the rails, which are furnished with tenons, and extending the necessary distance along the bottom of the mortised section, and there kept in lposition by the buttons z'. The shaft H extends at one end' suiiiciently far beyond the rail to admit of the ratchet-.wheel T being placed on it, and also the crank b, for operatingshaft H. Near the top of .uprights A is pivoted the shaft N, which has on it the pulley V, the pulley being midway between .the uprights. In operating my lounge, which is intended chiefly for feeble and aged persons,` one-end of a cord, a, is fastened to tie d, passed over pulleys V and m, and then secured to .shaft H. If the occupant of the lounge'desires to assume a perpendiculan position, he will turn the` crank from right to left. The cord will then wind around shaft H until the lounge is brought to vertical position between the uprights A, and the occupant in a situation to step of the lounge. Should he wish to raise his body erect while his legs remain in a horizontal position, he will turn the buttons z' to onev side, so as to remove them from the ends of. the cleats P; he will then-operate the crank and raise the jointed ends of the rails upon which his body rests, while the remaining sections of the rails continue stationary. To prevent the ratchet Tf1-om turning back, the pawl t is provided and hinged to the side of cleat P. In order to make a seat at the lower end-of the lounge, remove the buttbns z' to one side, and turn the jointed section near the foot-board downward at right angles with the. remaining sections of the rails g, and the object is is accomplished. l

Having thus described my'invention, what'I claim, and desireto secure by Letters Patent, is-

1; I claim the jointed rails g g, in combnationwith cleats P P and buttons z' z', the whole arranged and operating as and for the purpose herein set forth.

2. The employment of pulleys m and V, cord a, und frame R, when used in combination with jointed rails q y, the whole constructed and operating in the manner and for the purpose herein specied.
