SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 608,974, dated August 9, 1898. A lication filed November 13, 1893. Serial No; 490,741. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED EDETWILER, of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Valves for Gas Heaters; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention,which will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The main object of my invention is to regulate the gas and air supply independently of the gas-controlling cocks.
It consists, essentially, of a supplementary gas-regulating valve and an air-regulating valve in connection with the gas-controlling cock and of certain peculiarities of construction and arrangement, hereinafter particularly described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings like letters designate the same parts in both figures' Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section of the device embodying my improvements, and Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same.
A represents a valve-case,which is formed or provided with externally-threaded and longitudinally-bored necks or extensions to, a, and a and with the valve-chambers a and a, which communicate with each other through an aperture (1 and intersect, respectively, the bores of necks a and a. The neck a, the bore of which intersects or communicates with chamber 6?, is for attachment to the gas-supply pipe and is formed at right angles to the necks a and a which are parallel with each other and are internally threaded.

O is the controlling-cock, having a threaded stem which takes into the internal thread in neck a and is adapted to be seated in and close the opening a from chamber a into chamber a The stem of said cock passes through a stuffing-box formed by the inter- .nally-threaded gland c and the outer end of the neck M, on which it is screwed, and is provided at its outer end with a hand-wheel c or other suitable device to facilitate its operation by hand.
. D is a concaved tapering regulatingwalve fitted to a similarly-formed contracted opening in the inner end of the neck a. The outer enlarged part cl of its stem is threaded in the outer end of the bore in which the valve is inserted, and the protruding end is formed with a slot, as shown, or otherwise to receive a screw-driver or other implement for adjustment. Being intended for permanent adjustment or regulation of the gas-supply aperture it is made and located so as not to be moved directly by hand, but to require an instrument for its adjustment. By the peculiar formation of the needle-valve D and its seat the area of the gas feed or supply open- 'ing may be varied without diminishing the pressure, and in this respect I have found it far superior to the ordinary cone formation, which in contracting the opening also tends to reduce the pressure and spread the gas, thereby producing a white or yellow flame instead of the blue flame for heating purposes.
E is an air-regulating-valve disk threaded upon the neck a between the valve-case A and the outer end of the mixing-chamber B. By turning it toward or from the end of the mixing-chamber the size of the opening and the consequent supply of air to the mixingchamber are varied as desired.
6 is a jam-nut by which said valve-disk is locked in place when properly adjusted.
It will be obvious from the foregoing description, in connection with the drawings, that the gas and air regulating valves may be adjusted independently of each other and of the gas-controlling cock 0.
Various changes in minor details of mechanioal construction may be made within the intended spirit and scope of my invention.
I am' aware that gas burners or heaters have been provided with needle-pointed valves and also with cone-shaped valves, and I make no claim thereto. My invention differs there from in providing the valve with a concave point or a point having concave walls, which causes the gas issuing from the end of the neck in which the concave-pointed valve fits to assume a different direction and to issue without gas from one side of the valve-point, impinging against the gas from the other side of the valve, and consequently in a more direct path and with less obstruction, which, in connection with the gas-mixer at the end of the neck, is believed to draw more air into the mixer, so as to cause better combustion, and consequently produce a brighter and more intense flame.
I am also aware of the patent to G. W. Denzer, dated December 3, 1889, No. 416,670, for an injector-burner, in which is shown an oil-tube with a nozzle passing through a steam chamber or cap, both of the form shown in the drawings to that patent, and I make no claim to the structure shown therein. My invention is in a different class of burners and serves a different purpose, and when combined with an air-mixer produces a result not contemplated or produced by the injector-burner of Denzer.
I claim 1. In a valve for gas-heaters, the combination of a vaivecase formed with two intercommunicating chambers, each of which has an outlet, and suitable valves for controlling such outlets, substantially as and for the purposes described.
2. In a valve for gas-heaters, the combination of an adjustable feed-regulating valve, formed with a concave tapering end, a valvecase formed with a reduced opening corresponding to the concave tapering end of said valve, to receive the valve, and a gas and air mixing chamber located at the end of the reduced opening in the valve-case, substantially as and for the purposes described.
' 3. In a valve for gas-heaters, the valve-case formed with the parallel hollow necks a and a the chambers a and a communicating witheach other and intersecting the necks a and a and the hollow neck a for attachment of the gas-supply and in communication with the chamber a in combination with adjustable valves in the necks a and a and an air and gas mixer at the end of the hollow neck a, substantially as and for the purposes described.
4. In a valve for gas-heaters, the valve-case formed with longitudinally-bored necks a, a, a and the communicating valve-chambers a a and provided with the controlling-cock having a threaded stem engaging threads in the neck a and controlling the opening between the two valve-chambers, and the regulating-valve fitting in the neck a, said regulating-valve projecting through the valve-case and threaded therein, substantially as and for the purposes described.
5. A valve for gas-heaters, consisting of the valve-case formed with a neck for a controlling-cock, a neck for a regulating-valve parallel thereto, two communicating valve-chambers, one of which intersects the bore of the controlling-cock neck and the other the bore of the regulating-valve neck, a gas-supply neck at an angle to the other necks and communicating with one'of the valve-chambers, a screw-threaded controllingcock fitting screw-threads in the controlling-neck and 0011 trolling the communication between the two valve-chambers, a regulating-valve fitting in its neck and projecting through the valve-case in which it is threaded, an air and gas mixing chamber into one end of which the end of the regulating-valve neck projects, and an air-regulating-valve disk threaded upon the neck of the regulating-valve between the valve-case and the adjacent end of the mixin g-chamber, substantially as and for the purposes described.
