To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IVILLIAM II. TYLER, a citizen of the UnitedStates, residing at David City, in the county of Butler and State of Nobraska, have invented a new and usefulIIusking-Pin, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to eorn-hnsking devices to be applied to the hand for protecting the fingers when snapping the cars from the stalks or stripping the husks therefrom.
The purpose of the improvement is to provide an implement of the character aforesaid which will conform to the hand when closed and enable a firm grip to be had thereon, which will preclude a rapid wearing away of the attaching-strap, and which will dispense with the use of buckles to adapt the implement to different-sized hands.
For a full understanding of the merits and advantages of the invention reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings and the following description.
The improvement is susceptible of various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof, and tea full disclosure of the invention an adaptation thereof is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved corn-husking implement. Fig. 2 is a detail view in perspective showing the finger- 5 guard omitted and the fastening end of the strap disconnected from the butt-end of the husking-pin. Fig. 3 shows a different arrangement of the straps. Fig. 4 is a detail view of the husking-pin. Fig. 5 is a detail View of the finger-guard.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in the several views of the drawings by the same reference characters. 5 The husking-pin l is formed of a single blank and has its active end pointed and curved and its rear or butt end curved rapidly in an opposite direction to the curvature of the point, so as to extend around the little finger of the hand and terminating in a T-head 2, the edges adjacent to the T-head being notched, whereby a neck portion 3 is formed. The rear portion of the huskingpin is flat or straight between its edges, and thefront portion curves between the longitudinal edges to conform to the hand when closed; This formation of the pin enables it to be struck from comparatively thin sheet-steel or other material suitable for the purpose and possessing the requisite strength to with stand the work and fit the hand comfortably without causing any cramping or injurious contact therewith by reason of the fingers closing against the edges.
A strap 4, of-leather or other suitable material, is secured to the husking-pin by rivets or in any other convenient and substantial manner, and its edges may be parallel or diverging according to the design of the constructor, and this strap is provided near its rear end with a loop 5 to receive the neck portion 3 of the husking-pin and midway of its ends with a loop 6, for a purpose presently to be described. A fastening-strap 7 is applied to the front end of the strap at and is formed with a series of obliquely-disposed slits 8, which are adapted to receive the T- head 2, whereby the implement is secured to the hand, the loose end portion of the strap 4 and the strap 7 passing over the fingers 8e and the strap 7 being secured by passing the T-head 2 through one of the oblique slits 8. The oblique disposition of the slits 8 enables the head 2 to be readily passed through them by a drawing action, and upon bringing the strap 7 in line with the husking-pin the T- head 2 will extend across the slit and interlock therewith and prevent accidentaldisengagement of the strap 7. If, as shown in Fig. 1, it is desired to form a cot 9 for the forefinger, the strap 7 is passed through the loop 6 and subsequently around the remaining fingers and connected with the T-head 2,
as previously explained.
The finger-guard 10 is a blank having its front portion bent away from the huskingpin and its rear portion deflected between its edges to fit snugly against the convex side of the husking-pin, to which it is riveted or otherwise secured, the bent portion of the loo blank extending over the forefinger and protecting it and the strap 4. and preventing a movement of the pin through the hand when the implement is in service. It is not essen: tial to the successful operation of the implement that the finger-guard be provided, although in the preferable form it will be applied substantially in the manner illustrated in Fig. 1.
In Fig. 3 the strap 4 is secured to the husking-pin throughout its length, except for a short distance at its rear end, which engages with the little finger, as in the other forms of the invention, and this strap is formed with a slit a short distance from its front end, through which the strap 7 passes and which is secured to the husking-pin by the same means employed for connecting the strap 4 therewith. This disposition of the straps leaves the forefinger free, the implement being fastened to the remaining fingers when in position, as will be readily understood.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is- 1. In a corn-husking implement, the com-' bination of a husking-pin pointed at one end and provided at its opposite end with a T- head, a strap secured to the husking-pin and.
having a loop near its rear end to receive the T-head and provided with a second loop at a point between its ends, and a fasteningstrap applied to the first-mentioned strap and formed with a series of slits to make connection with the T-head of the husking-pin,
substantially as described.
3. In a corn-husking implement, a husking-pin pointed at one end and having its rear end curved to engage with the little finger and provided with a Thead, and a strap secured to the pin and having a loop near its rear end to receive the neck portion of the T-head, and having its opposite end terminating in a fastening-strap provided with a series of slits to make adjustable connection with the aforesaid T-head, substantially as and for the purpose set forth;
