TQ ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM Burr, of Cincinnati, Hamilton county, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Powder for Facing Moulds and for other purposes; and I do I hereby declare thefollowiug to he a full, clear, and exact description thereof, and of the mode of preparing the same.
The object of my invention is to produce a powder adapted for facing moulds," of sand or'of loam, to prevent the adhesion of the sand to the metal during and after the act of casting the same. I take the hard substance or cinder which encrusts the bottom and rear ends in the interior of v coal-gas or petroleum retorts, and which has the semi-metallic lustre and other properties of graphite. This substance I break and pulverize until it assumes the condition of an almost impalpahle powder. I then pass the same through a bolt or sieve of I wire'gauze, and having barrelled or -otherwisesecured'the part which has traversed the gauze for the usehereafter explained, I return the coarser and unbolted portion to the mill until it shall have been reduced to the requisite fineness. The powder may be formed either from the encrusted residuum of coal-gas retorts'or'of those employed in the distillation of petroleum, and the powder thus obtained may be used either in conjunction or separately. The powder thus composed and prepared is found to be far superior to all others, as far as known-to me, fordustiug the matrix or interior surface of sand, loam, and other like moulds, in order to prevent adhesion of the substaneeof the mould to-the surface of the casting. The powder is also found well adapted as a store polish instead of plumbago or black lead. i
I claim herein as new, and of my invention- The moulders facing powder, composed andprepared in the manner described.
In testimony of which invention I hereunto set my hand.
' WILLIAM BATTY.
