SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 608,146, dated J 1113 26, 1898.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. BARKER, a citizen of the United States, and aresident of Hartford, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bells, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, whereby any one skilled in the art can make and use the same.
My invention relates more particularly to the class of bells used on vehicles for the purpose of sounding an alarm; and the object of myinvention is to provide a bell of this class in which the striking mechanism may be brought into operative connection with a giciyable part for the purpose of sounding a To this end my invention consists in the device as a whole, in the combination of parts making up such a device, and in the details and their combination, as more particularly hereinafter described, an (1" pointed out in the claims. 7
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a view of a portion of the front fork of a bicycle, showing the front wheel with my improved bell operatively mounted in connection with the wheel on the fork. Fig. 2 is a detail view of thebase-plate, lookinginside,withthemechanism mounted thereon. Fig. 3 is a detail edge view of the bell with parts broken away to show construction. Fig. 4 is a detail view of a base-plate, showing a diagram of different positions of the pinion-lever.
In the accompanying drawings the letter a denotes the front fork of a bicycle, and b the front wheel mounted therein.
The letter 0 denotes a clamp secured to the front fork in any suitable manner and having an arm 0 connected therewith at one end, the other end of the arm bearing a base-plate cl of a bell secured thereon in any suitable manner, a post (1, to which is secured a gong d forming a suitable means of connection between the base-plate and gong.
A hammer e is pivoted on the base-plate and is controlled in its striking movements by the springs 6 e suitably mounted on the base-plate.
A striking-disk f is mounted on a post f, secured to the base-plate, and a striking-gear g is arranged to impart rotation to the striking-disk. A striking-pin f is secured to the striking-disk in position to encounter a projection c on the hammer e in the rotation of the disk.
A striking-lever h is pivoted, preferably, to the base-plate 011 the outside, one end of the striking-lever being provided with a cord 7a or like means for swinging the lever on its pivot. To the opposite end of the lever is pivoted a shaft 2', having mounted on one end a pinion 7t and on the other end afriction-disk Z. This shaft '6 projects through a slot d in the baseplate, the pinion It being located inside of the base-plate. A spring 71, holds the lever 71. at one limit of its play.
The pivotal point of connection of the striking-lever h is so located with reference to the striking-gear g that the pinion has the lever is swung on its pivot shall swing past the gear and at a distance therefrom to cause the teeth of the pinion and gear to mesh. The path of movement of the pinion 7a in the swinging movement of the striking-lever as the pinion engages the gear is in the same direction as that in which the gear rotates to operate the striking mechanism, and this insures the engagement of the teeth on the pinion and gear without liability of the teeth interfering with each other in a manner to wedge and prevent a proper operation of the device. 7
It is preferred that the lever shall swing in the same direction as that in which the pinion shall rotate to cause the proper sounding 0f the alarm.
I claim as my invention 1. In a bell-striking mechanism including a gear, a swinging lever, a pinion mounted on the lever, a friction-disk operatively connected with the pinion, means for rotating the friction-disk, and means for swinging the lever to cause engagement of the pinion and gear and friction-disk with driving means.
2. In a bell-striking mechanism including a gear, a swinging lever, a pinion mounted on the lever and adapted to be swung past a point at the periphery of the gear and on a radial line thereof with the teeth of the gear and pinion engaging, a friction -disk connected with the pinion, means for rotating support, a disk operatively mounted in connection with the hammer, a gong, a gear @011- nected with the disk, a swinging lever, apinion mounted on the lever, a friction-disk operatively connected with the pinion, means for driving the friction-disk, and means for swinging the lever to cause the pinion to engage the gear and the disk to engage the driving means.
