SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 608,048 dated July 26, 1898. Application filed December 30,1897. Serial No. 664,696. (No meter) To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN H. J AOKSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newburg, in the county of Orange and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spring'Bed NVork, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to simplify and improve the spring-work of spring-beds.
To this end my invention relates, first, to an improved sheet-metal clip for attaching the top coils of the springs to the edge wire and to the interior connecting or bracing wires. My improved clip comprises a shallow sheet-metal yoke having a straight wall to engage the edge wire or brace-wire of the spring-work and a curved wall to engage the segment of the top coil of thespring. The clip, with the straight and curved walls for the purposes stated, is adapted tobe bent around the contiguous parts of the wires to be attached, and to facilitate the engagement of the curved edge with the spring-wire I form the engaging Wall of the curved edge of a series of tongues.
My invention relates, secondly, to an improved form of bracing-wire Work. It is usual to connect the top coils of the springs of spring-work by cords, wires, chains, or the like, which connecting devices have been arranged in various ways. These connecting cords, wires, or chains are most commonly arranged to connect the contiguous edges of the adjacent top coils of the springs, although they have sometimes been arranged in zigzag lines to connect the top coils of alternate springs in different rows.
According to my invention the connecting or bracing wires of the spring-work connect the alternate top coils of the springs in the adjacent rows, as has heretofore been proposed; but unlike the previous arrangements known to me I propose to form a hinged or pivotal joint between the top coils and the connecting-wires. I accomplish this by forming short straight portions in the zigzag bracing'or connecting wire and connecting these short straight portions to the top coils of the springs by means of my improved clip, above referred ,to.
In order that my invention may be fully understood, 1 will first describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings and afterward point out the novelty with more particularity in the annexed claims.
In said drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of a bed-spring constructed according to my invention, said view being only partly completed. Fig. 2 is a detail plan view representing my improved clip securing the top coil of the spring to one of the short straight portions of the connecting or bracing Wire. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of an improved clip.
In making a bed-spring it is customary-to arrange the supporting or base wires 1 1 and 2 2 in proper longitudinal and transverse relation and attach them to a base edge-wire support, which is not'shown in the accompanyin g drawings. To these supporting-wires l 1 and 2 2 the coil-springs 3 are attached in any suitable manner. The top edge wire 5 and the bracing or connecting wires are then put in place and properly connected to the top coils. My present invention relates to the arrangement of these connecting bracewires and the attachment of the brace-wires and edge wire to the top coils of the springs.

To facilitate bending the straight flange 6 over the straight wire, said straight flange may be cut or serrated into small tongues or flanges similar to the tongues 6 The straight flange 6 is centrally cut out at 6 to reduce the metal of the clip and avoid the interference between said straight flange and the central binding-tongues 6.
In Figs. 1 and 2 it will be observed that each point of contiguity between the edge wire 5 and the top coils or springs 3 the edge wire and top coil are connected by one of my improved sheet-metal clips 6, the straight portions 6 of the clip engaging the edge wire, while the curved portion 6 engages the top coil of the spring.
.10 and 11 are the zigzag connecting or bracing Wires, which are arranged to extend in zigzag lines longitudinally through said spring to connect the top coils of the alternate springs in two adjacent rows. These zigzag bracing or connecting wires are form ed with short straight portions at the points of contiguity with the top coils of the springs, one of these straight portions being represented in Fig. 2 by dotted lines.
It will be observed that one of my improved sheet-metal clips 6 is employed to connect the top coil of each spring with one of the short straight portions of the zigzag connecting or bracing Wire, the straight portions being hinged or pivoted in the clip, so that when a particular spring is depressed there will be no strain upon the connection.
It will be observed from Fig. 1 of the drawings that when the springs at one side of the spring-bed structure are depressed the zig zag bracing or connecting Wires 10 and 11 Will move at the point of pivotal connection with the top coils, thereby reducing the transverse strain upon the springs in the contiguous rows.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a bed-spring, the combination of rows 0 of suitablysupported springs, zigzag c0nnecting and bracing wires connecting the alternate springs of adjacent rows and extending longitudinally through the spring, said zagzag wires having short straight portions contiguous with the top coils of the springs to Which they are connected, and sheet-metal clips connecting the short straight portions of the zigzag wires with the contiguous portions of the top coils of the springs, each of 0 stantially as and for the purpose set forth.
