To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR T. TIMEWELL, a citizen of the United States, residing in Ohicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois,have invented a new and usefullmprovement in Machines for Transferring and Sewing Filled Sacks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to machines for sewing filled sacks and transferring or carrying the filled sacks from the filling, packing, or
' weighing apparatus to and through the sewing mechanism. In machines heretofore in use for this purpose-such, for example, as those heretofore patented to me in Letters Patent Nos. 476,778, 539,455, 548,029, and 562,438 it has been customary to insert the empty sack in an opening and closing traveling holder, which serves to hold the sack open while being filled and then to hold its mouth closed or in position for sewing while the sack is being conveyed past the sewing mechanism and sewed. In filling sacks, however, with finely pulverized or powdered materialfor example, such as fiour it is customary and necessary or desirable to employ a rotary or screw packer working in a cylindrical filling-tube of substantially the diameter of the sack, which enters the sack and holds the mouth of it open while it is being filled and thefiour or other material packed therein by operation of the rotary packer. Such a cylindrical'tube or device for holding the sack open while bcing filled is of course not adapted to collapse or to hold the mouth of the sack closed while it is being sewed or conveyed past the sewing mechanism.
The object of my invention is to provide a filled-sack sewing and transferring machine adapted to do this work above mentioned or to transfer or conveythe filled sack from the scale or other platform of the rotary-packer filling mechanism to the traveling holder,
- which latter is adapted to receive the sack after it is filled and to hold its mouth closed and to convey it past the sewing mechanism while its mouth is so held closed or in position for sewing.
To this end my invention consists, primarespectively, of Fig. 2.

The traveling holder consists, preferably, of two straight opening and closing clamp bars, between which when open or separated the filled sack is conveyed and suspended by the conveyer and which then close or clamp together in a straight line and hold the sack securely while the holder moves forward and conveys the sack past the sewing mechanism.
My invention also consists in the novel construction of parts and devices and in the novel combinations of parts and devices herein shown and described, and specified in the claims.

The filled-sack conveyer B may be of any suitable construction adapted to grasp the sack at opposite points of its mouth and cause the edges 00 w of the sack-mouth to somewhat approach each other and thus enter between the clamp bars or jaws D D of the traveling sack-holder. A simple and convenient construction of filled-sack conveyer is illustrated in the drawings as being the form I prefer to employ, and consists of a pair of reverse-acting lazy-tongs b b, pivoted together at their bend or angle 1) and connected at their upper ends by pivoted links 6 b to a pulley Z7 which travels on an inclined endless track B. By simply inserting the ends or prongs of the tongs within the mouth of the filled sack the weight of the filled sack itself causes the prongs or gripping-jaws b b of the conveyer to properly grip the edges of the sack-mouth at opposite points and thus to cause the edges of the sack to extend in parallel lines and near enough together to enter properly between the open ends of the clamp-bars D D of the traveling holder.
By employing an inclined endless track B for the conveyer B to run upon it may be caused to move back and forth by its own gravity, except at the ends or turns of the track, where it inclines upward and where revolving pushers or wheels B B maybe employed to push or convey it up the inclines. To tighten the prongs or gripping-jaws b b of the conveyer in or against the sack and lift the sack off the platform 0, I provide the track B with a movable or hinged section 13 the free end of which is adapted to be raised bya treadle B through the connecting-link B lever B, and link B As soon as the sack is lifted sufficient] y to clear the platform 0 of the scales the conveyer will at once begin to move down the incline and carry the sack between the jaws or clamping-bars D D of the traveling sack-holder D. The conveyertrack B is provided with a depression B so that after the clamping-bars D D close upon the sack, so as to properly hold it and support its weight, the conveyer B may on entering this depressed portion B of the track be relieved of the weight of the sack and .be automatically released therefrom and withdrawn out of the way as the farther or subsequent paths of the sack and of the conveyer diverge or separate from each other.
The transversely-movable or opening and closing 3' aw or clamping-bar D of the traveling holder is connected to its fellow D by a pin d, secured to one of said bars near the front end thereof and entering a hole in the other bar. The meeting faces of the clampbars are provided one with a groove d and the other with a tongue or rib d to increase the grip of the bars upon the edges of the sack, and for the same reason I make one of said meeting faces, preferably the tongue, of rubber.
The holder is moved or propelled forward alonga track or guideway G, having a slot 9 for the mouth edges of the sack to project through and side rails or ledges g, preferably, by means of a rack d formed on the bar D, the connecting-pin d causing the bar D to move with the bar D, which engages a pinion d on the shaft 61 A weight (1 connected by a line (1 passing over pulleys 61 ct", serves to return the holder to position. The transversely-movable bar or jaw D is operated or opened and closed against its fellow to clamp the sack between them by means of a reciprocating slide D which is connected to a rack D, that engages a gear D on the rock-shaft D, said rock-shaft having an arm D connected by a link D with a treadle or foot-lever D The side rail g opposite the holder-closing slide D is provided with antifriction-rollers g and the holder-closing slide D is provided with similar antifriction-rollers g for the holder to slide against as it moves longitudinally forward along the track Gr. The track Gis also furnished wit-h an overhanging guide G, having a depending ledge 9 against which the antifriction-rollers d on.the transversely-movable bar D of the holder bear as the holder travels forward and back. Two of these rollers 01 are located near the front end of the bar D and one near the rear end thereof, as is clearly indicated in Fig. 6. The rollers cl bear against one side of the ledge g as the loarD travels forward and serve to keep the holder closed, and they bear upon the opposite side of the ledge g as the bar D moves backward, and thus hold the holder open. In order to permit the rollers (Z to first pass on one side of the ledge and to return upon the other side, the ledge or guide rail g is made sectional, with gaps between its sections, and its two end sections g g are preferably made hinged or movable by pivotpins g and furnished with inclined ends g and springs 9 as shown in Fig. 18, so that when the holder D has advanced snfficiently far to carry the sack entirely past the sewing mechanism F as the rollers (Z reach the ends of the sections g 9 said sections will be swung by the springs g against the ledge g which limits their movement, as shown in Fig. 4, and as the bar D begins its backward movement the rollers 61 will engage the sections g g and be guided by them to the op posite side of the guide-ledge 9 (see dotted line, Fig. 6) and will thus force the transversely-movable bar D of the holder to separate from its fellow member D, and thus permit the sewed sack to drop out or be discharged. At this time, the rear end of the rack d having passed the gear cl, the weight (1 begins to return the holder to its original position ready to receive another sack, and the springs g having thrown the pivoted sections g 9 into the positions indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 6, may thus cause the rollers (Z on the holder to pass back on the opposite side of the guide-rail g g 9 and thus cause the bar D to remain open or separate from the bar D on the return movement of the holder. This makes a convenient means for automatically returning the holder open; but other suitable means or mechanism for this purpose may be employed, if desired.
The sewing mechanism F may be of any suitable construction known to those skilled in the art and needs no detailed description. The sewing mechanism which I prefer to employ and which. I have illustrated in the drawings is similar to that shown and described in my former patents above referred to or to that shown and described in my application, Serial No. 578,620, filed February 8, 1896, and patented January 11, 1898, No. 597,075. It comprises a frame or arm F, attached to the bed-plate A of the frame at one side of the slotted guideway or track G and overhanging said track, and a needle f and looper and presser-foot f and thread holder and cutter, as will be readily understood by those skilled in the art by reference to my said former patents. The sewing mechanism is operated from the driven shaft F through a friction-clutch connecting mechanism F E, which is operated automatically by the traveling holder D engaging a slide F projecting in the path of said holder. A similar slide F operates the thread holder and cutter,
The slides F and F are each provided with a hinged section F held in position by a spring F so that when the holder moves forward said slides will be operated as required, while by the turning of said hinged sections on their pivots the holder-bar D may return along the same path without reciprocating said slides.
To assist in propelling the holderD forward, I provide in addition to the pinion d on the shaft (Zia second pinion (Z on a shaft (1 which also engages the rack 61 The shafts d and (Z are geared together by bevel-gears (Z (Z C1 d, the gears (1 and (Z being on a connecting-shaft d". Motion is communicated to the shaft (1 from the driving-shaft H through a clutch H, which is thrown out of engagement with its fellow II when the holder-bar D is making its return movement under the impulse of the weight d so that the rack (i may thus turn the pinions d d in the opposite direction. The clutch H is thus antomatically thrown out of engagement with its fellow by a spring H acting against the clutch-lever H. The clutch-lever H is moved in the opposite direction to hold the clutch H in gear by the same treadle D and rockshaft D which are employed to operate the slide D that actuates the transversely-movable bar D of the traveling holder D. This is done by providing said rock-shaft D with an arm D connected by a link H with an arm I'I on a rock-shaft H which hasa sec ond arm H connected by a link H with the clutch-lever H gagement with its fellow by the operator holding the treadle D depressed until the front end of the holder D engages the slide K and pushes it back, when the pin on said slide K engages the arm H and thus holds the clutch H in engagement, so that the operator may then take his foot off the treadle. The link H has a slot h to connect it with the arm H to permit the link to be operated by the treadle D and rock-shaft D before the traveling holder strikes the slide K. The slide K projects, like the slides F F, in the path of the traveling holder, and, like them, it is provided with a hinged section K, held in position by a spring K to permit the holder to make its return movement without operatin g the slide.
I claim 1. In a filled-sack transferring and sewing mechanism, the combination with a conveyer for the filled sack and a sewing mechanism of a traveling sack-holder comprising a pair of opening and closing clamps, between which, when open, the mouth of the filled sack may be slipped or moved; the two opening and closing clamps of said sack-holder being sep- The clutch H is held in enarate and unconnected when'open to enable 7 the mouth of the filled sack to enter between said clamps, and to he slipped or moved forward lengthwise of the clamps into position between them, substantially as specified.
2. The combination with a filled-sack con veyer of a traveling sack-holder comprising a pair of clamp-bars, between which, when open, the mouth of the filled sack may he slipped or moved by said conveyer, and a sewing mechanism, substantially as specified.
3. The combination with a filled-sack conveyer of a traveling sack-holder comprising a pair of clamp-bars, between which, when open, the mouth of the filled sack may be slipped or moved by said conveyer, a sewing mechanism, and a slotted track for said holder, substantially as specified.
4. The combination with a filled-sack conveyer of a traveling sack-holder comprising a pair of clamp-bars, between which, when open, the mouth of the filled sack may he slipped or moved by said conveyer, a sewing mechanism, a slotted track for said holder, and means for operating the transverselymovable bar of said holder, substantially as specified.
5. The combination with a filled-sack conveyer of a traveling sack-holder comprising a pair of clamp-bars, between which, when open, the mouth of the filled sack may be slipped. or moved by said conveyer, a sewing mechanism, a slotted track for said holder, means for operating the transversely-movable bar of said holder, and means for moving said hollder along said traclgsubstantially as specifie 6. The combination with a filled-sack conveyer, of a traveling sack-holder comprising a pair of opening and closing clamp-bars between which when open the mouth of the filled sack is slipped or moved by said conveyer, substantially as specified.
7. The combination with a filled-sack conveyer, of a traveling sack-holder comprising a pair of opening and closing clamp-bars between which when open the mouth of the filled sack is slipped or moved by said conveyer, the meeting faces of said clamp-bars having the one a groove and the other a tongue or rib to increase the grip of said clamp-bars upon the mouth of the sack when the clampbars are closed, substantially as specified.
8. The combination with a filled-sack conveyer, of a traveling sack-holder comprising a pair of opening and closing clamp-bars between which when open the mouth of the filled sack is slipped or moved by said conveyer, the meeting faces of said clamp-bars having the one a groove and the other a tongue or rib to increase the grip of said clamp-bars upon the mouth of the sack when the clamp-bars are closed, and one of said meeting faces of said clamp-bars being of rubber, or like material, substantially as specified.
9. In a filled-sack-sewing machine, the combination with a sewing mechanism of atraveling sack-holdercomprising a pair of opening and closing clamps, between which, when open, the mouth of the filled sack may be slipped or moved, and thcn clamped by the closing of the clamps, said clamps when open being separate and disconnected at their sackreceiving end to enable the mouth of the sack to be entered between them and slipped or moved lengthwise of the clamps into position between them, substantially as specified.
10. In a filled-sack-sewing machine, the combination with a sewing mechanism, of a traveling sack holder reciprocating forward and back in the same path, of a slide projecting in the path of the traveling holder for setting the sewing mechanism in operation, said slide being provided with a hinged section to permit the holder to make its return movement in the same path Without operating said slide, substantially as specified.
11. In a filled-sack-sewing machine, the combination with a sewing mechanism, of a traveling sack-holder reciprocating forward and back in the same path, of a slide projecting in the path of the traveling holder for setting the sewing mechanism in operation, said slide being provided with a hinged section to permit the holder to make its return movement in the same path without operating said slide, and a second slide for operating the thread holder and cutter of the sewing mechanism and provided with a similar hinged section, substantially as specified.
12. In a filled-sack-sewing machine, the combination with a sewing mechanism, of a traveling sack-holder, a track for the holder, and an overhanging guide for the holder provided with a guide-rail for holding the transversely-movable clamp-bar of the holder closed, said guide-rail being sectional to permit said clamp-bar of the holder to open after the holder passes the sewing mechanism, substantially as specified.
13. In a filled-sack-sewing machine, the combination with a sewing mechanism, of a traveling sack-holder, a track for the holder, and an overhanging guide for the holder provided with a guide-rail for holding the transversely movable clamp bar of the holder closed, said guide-rail being sectional to permit said clamp-bar of the holder to open after the holder passes the sewing mechanism, and said guide-rail being provided with a hinged section to cause the transversely movable clamp-bar of the holder on its return movement to open or separate from its fellow, substantially as specified.
14:. In a filled-sack-sewing machine, the combination with an opening and closing sack-holder adapted to receive when open a filled sack, and a filled-sack conveyer provided with devices for grasping and suspending a filled sack from and by opposite points of its mouth so as to draw its mouth edges together and adapt them to enter between the clamp-bars of the holder, substantially as specified.
15. In a filled-sack-sewing machine, the combination with an opening and closing sack-holder adapted to receive when open a filled sack, and a filled-sack conveyer provided with devices for grasping and suspending a filled sack from and by opposite points of its mouth so as to draw its mouth edges together and adapt them to enter between the clamp-bars of the holder, and a sewing mechanism, substantially as specified.
16. The combination with a traveling sackholder, of a track for the holder, a rack on the holder, driving-pinion engaging said rack to propel the holder forward, a driving-shaft, a clutch between said driving shaft and pinion, and a slide connected with said clutch and projecting in the path of said holder and engaged thereby to hold the movable member of the clutch in engagement with its fellow, and a spring for opening the clutch when the holder passes said slide, substantially as specified.
17. The combination with a traveling sackholder, of a track for the holder, a rack on the holder, driving-pinion engaging said rack to propel the holder forward, a driving-shaft, a clutch between said driving shaft and pinion, and a slide connected with said clutch and projecting in the path of said holder and engaged thereby to hold the movable member of the clutch in engagement with its fellow,
and a spring for opening the clutch when the holder passes said slide, said slide having a hinged section to prevent said slide being operated on the return movement of said holder, substantially as specified.
18. The combination with a traveling sack holder, of a track for the holder, a rack on the holder, driving-pinion engaging said rack to propel the holder forward, a driving-shaft, a clutch between said driving shaft and pinion, and a slide connected with said clutch and projecting in the path of said holder and engaged thereby to hold the movable member of the clutch in engagement with its fellow, a spring for opening the clutch when the holder passes said slide, said slide having a hinged section to prevent said slide being operated on the return movement of said holder, and a weight andline for returning the holder, substantially as specified.
19. The combination with a traveling sackholder, of a track for the holder, a rack on the holder, driving-pinion engaging said rack to propel the holder forward, a driving-shaft, a clutch between said driving shaft and pinion, and a slide connected with said clutch and projecting in the path of said holder and engaged thereby to hold the movable member of the clutch in engagement with its fellow, a spring for opening the clutch when the holder passes said slide, said slide having a hinged section to prevent said slide being 0perated on the return movement of said holder, and a weight and line for returning the holder, an overhanging guide for the holder provided with a sectional guide rail having hinged sec tions for holding the transversely-movablc bar of the holder open on the return movement of the holder, substantially as specified.
20. In-a filled-sack-sewing machine, the combination with a sewing mechanism, of a traveling sack-holder, a track for the holder, and an overhanging guide for the holder provided with a guide-rail for holding the transversely movable clampbar of the holder closed, said guide-rail being sectional to permit said clamp-bar of the holder to open after the holder passes the sewing mechanism, and said holder being provided with rollers to bear against said guide-rail, substantially as specified.
21. In a filled-sacksewing machine, the combination with a sewing mechanism, of a traveling sack-holder, a track for the holder, and an overhanging guide for the holder provided with a guide-rail for holding the transverselymovable clamp -bar of the holder closed, said guide-rail being sectional to permit said clamp-bar of the holder to open after the holder passes the sewing mechanism, and said guide-rail being provided with hinged sections to cause the transversely-movable clamp-bar of the holder on its return movement to open or separate from its fellow, said holder being provided with rollers to bear against said guide-rail, substantially as specified.
22. In a filledesack-sewing machine, the combination with an opening and closing sack-holder adapted to receive when open a filled sack, and a filled-sack conveyer provided with devices for grasping and suspending a filled sack from and by opposite points of its mouth so as to draw its mouth edges together and adapt them to enter between the clamp-bars of the holder, said filled-sack conveyer consisting in a pair of reverselyacting lazy-tongs, substantially as specified. .23. In a filled-sack-sewing machine, the combination with an opening and :closing sack-holder adapted to receive when open a filled sack, and a filled-sackconveyer provided with devices for grasping and suspending a filled. sack from and by opposite points of its mouth so as to draw its mouth edges together and adapt them. to enter between the clamp-bars of the holder, a sewing mechanism, said filled-sack conveyer consisting in a pair of reversely-acting lazy-tongs, and a track for said filled-sack. conveyer to travel upon, substantially as specified.
24. In a filled-sack-sewing machine, the combination with an opening and closing sack-holder adapted to receive when open a filled sack, and a filled-sack conveyer provided with devices for grasping and suspending a filled sack from and by opposite points of its mouth so as to draw its mouth edges together and adapt them to enter between the clamp-bars of the holder, a sewing mechanism, and a track for said filled-sack conveyer, having a hinged or movable section for lifting the filled sack from the platform or support upon which it rests, substantially as specified;
25.. In a filled-sack-sewing machine,the combination with an opening, and closing sack-holder adapted to receive when open a filled sack, and a filled-sack conveyer provided with devices for grasping and suspending a filled sack from and by opposite points of its mouth so as to draw its mouth edges together and adapt them to enter between the clamp-bars of the holder, a sewing mechanism, and a track for said filled-sack conveyer, having a hinged or movable section for lifting the filled sack from the platform or support upon which it rests, and mechanism for operating said hinged section, substantially as specified.
26. In a filled-sack-sewing machine, the combination with an opening and closing sack-holder adapted to receive when open a filled sack, and a filled-sack conveyer provided with devices for graspingand suspending a filled sack from and by opposite points of its mouth so as to draw its mouth edges together and adapt them to enter between the clamp-bars of the holder, a sewing mechanism, and an endless track for said filled-sack conveyer having downwardly and upwardly inclined portions, and wheels or pushers for slide,'a rack and pinion for propelling the holder forward and a weight and connect-ingline for returning the holder, substantially as specified.
28. In a filled-sack-sewing machine, the combination with a sewing mechanism, of a traveling sack-holder reciprocating forward and back in the same path, of a slide projectin g in the path of the traveling holder for setting the sewing mechanism in operation, said slide being provided with a hinged section to permit the holder to make its return movement in the same path without operating said 'slide, a rack and pinion for propelling the holder forward and a weight and connectingline for returning the holder, a slotted track for the holder, and an overhanging guide for the holder having a sectional guide-rail, substantially as specified.
29. In a filled-sack-sewing machine, the combination with a sewing mechanism, of a traveling sack-holder reciprocating forward and back in the same path, of a slide projecting in the path of the traveling holder for setting the sewing mechanism in operation, said slide being provided with a hinged section to permit the holder to make iis return movement in the same path without operating said slide, a rack and pinion for propelling the holder forward and a weight and connectingline for returning the holder, a slotted track for the holder, and an overhanging guide for the holder having a sectional guide-rail, said holder having rollers engaging said sectional guide-rail, substantially as specified.
30. In a filled-sack-sewing machine, the combination with a sewing mechanism, of a traveling sack-holder reciprocating forward and back in the same path, of a slide projecting in the path of the traveling holder for setting the sewing mechanism in operation, said slide being provided with a hinged section to permit the holder to make its return movement in the same path without operating said slide, a rack and pinion for propelling the holder forward and a weight and connectingline for returning the holder, a slotted track for the holder, and an overhanging guide for the holder having a sectional guide-rail, said holder having rollers engaging said sectional guide-rail, said sectional guide-rail having hinged sections, substantially as specified.
