JOHN C. JEWETT, i 0F BUFFALO, NEW YORK. Letters Patent No. 60,738,Y dated January 1, 1867. l
IMPRVBD SLOP JAP..

-T0 ALL WHoM Ir MAY concurra:
Be it known that I, JOHN C. JEWErLof the city of Buffalo, in the county of Erie, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful improvements in the mode of constructing Slap-Jars; and 'I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to theaccompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical section; ,and
Figure 2 a top view of a jar of my improved'construction.
Like letters indicate corresponding parts in both drawings.
The nature oi' my improvements consists in the construction of the cover with a lip turningy vertically downward from the periphery thereof, so that its edge is immersed in an annular reservoir of water formed around thebody of thev jar, in combination with a centraltrap at the induction oriice of the cover, both so arranged that, in peuringwater into the jar without removing the cover, the central trap, and also thc annular reservoir become filled, and prevent the escape of all elluvia from the vessel.
Y As represented in the drawings, Aris the body of the jar, B the cover, and C a Haring rim7 starting from the outside a little below the top edge of the jar, so as to leave an annular space around the top for retaining water. The cover B is concave on its top, so that it will drain toward the contre, but the outer edge is provided with a ilange, e, bent downward in a vertical position, or-nearly se. The circumference o f this liange is such as to allow it to pass easy over the top edge,f, of the jar, and the acute angle formed between the flange c and the inclined sides of the top, constitute a seat for the edge f to rest Iupon and holdtho covcr'so that it is not likely to be accidentally displaced. The pouring of water from another vessel on the cover .occasions an over` How before it can pass through the central oritlcehsullicient to ll the annular recess between the rim C, and sidesf, and the flange e, being immersed, makes the joint between the sides and cover hermctical, so that, no eiliuvia can escape from the intcriorby that passage.V The central aperture, D, of the cover is' also formed with a vertical tube' or funnel, z h, which directs the water into a suspended cup, E, below, the top edge of whichA is higher than the termination of the funnel L IL, so that the v'latter will always be slightly immersed in the liquid contained in the cup E, and in like manner prevent the escape of any eilluviaarising from the contents of the vessel. A cap or guard, G, is placed over the aperture D, for the double purpose of preventing the water from dashing directly into cup E, and by its force partially expelling the portion designed to be retained by the latter, and to form a knob or handle for the removal of the cover when required to empty the jar. rMetallic jars acquire, from use, an elfensive odor when entirely empty, and the provision here made renders that odor undiscernible by the simple precaution of pouringl a little pure water on the cover when it is to remain empty or unused.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by 'Letters Patent, is-
A slop jar provided with the annular water recess formed between the sides ff and rim C, submerged ange e e and central odor trap of the concave cover B, constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In witness whereof` I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.y
JNO, C. J'EWETT.
