To all whom it 71mg concern: I

be it known that I, ANNIE BUSSE, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Antonio, in the county of Bexar and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toys, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to toys, and particularly to that class thereof known as jack-inthe-box toys; and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class in which a spring-supported figure is confined in a box provided with a hinged cover, by which the figure is depressed when the box is closed, said cover being adapted to beheld in a closed position by a spring-operated catch which is adapted to be operated by a ball through which passes an elastic cord which is secured to the box.

The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved toy with the hinged cover thrown back and the spring-supported figure exposed, and Fig. 2 a partial section on the line 2- 2 of Fig. 1.

In the drawings forming part of this specification the separate parts of my improvement are designated by the same numerals of reference in each of the views, and in the practice of my invention I provide a box or casing 5, preferably rectangular in form and open at the top and provided with a hinged cover 0, said cover being hinged to one side of the box or casing, as shown at 7, and the under side of the cover at its outer edge is provided with a transverse catch-strip 8, which is secured thereto at its opposite ends in any desired manner.

, The front 9 of the box or casing 5 is provided centrally of its upper-side with a slot 10, as shown in Fig. 2, and secured thereover is a plate 11, which is preferably circular in form and in which is formed an opening 12.

The spring-operated catch 13 which I employ for holding the cover 6 in the closed position is V-shaped in form andis provided with a long arm 14 and a shorter arm 15, and the long arm 14 is inserted through the opening 12 in the plate 11 and the slot 10 in the front 9 of the box or casing, and the upper end of the lon gerarm 14 of the catch is provided with a lug or projection 16,which is adapted to engage with the catch 8, secured to the bottom of the cover 6 of the box or casing, and secured to the lower part of the plate 11 is a springarm 17, which projects outwardly and upwardly and through the upper end of which the shorter arm and the spring-operated catch 13 pass, and the outer end of the arm 15 of said catch is provided with a button or head 18. The plate 11 is also provided at its opposite sides with projections 19, by which it may be secured to the box or casing, and I also provide a ball 20, which is provided with a transverse bore 21, through which is loosely passed an elastic cord 22, and the ends of the cord 22 are connected with the opposite sides of the plate 11 or the projections 19 thereof in any desired manner, or the ends of said cord may be connected with the front 9 of the box or casing 5 at the opposite sides of the plate 11.

Mounted in the box or casing 5 is a figure 23, which is supported by a spiral spring in the usual manner; but this spring forms no part of this invention and is therefore not shown. The figure 23 may represent any desired personage or character, and when the cover 6 of the box or casing 5 is released the spring by which said figure is supported expands and throws the figure upwardly and the cover 6 backwardly, as shown in Fig. 1, and whenever it is desired to close the cover 6 of the box or casing 5 the figure is depressed and the cover 6 closed, and in this operation the catch 8 on the bottom of the cover passes downwardly over the lug or projection 16 on the upper end of the arm 14 of the spring-catch 13 and throws said arm inwardly, and the spring 17 immediately forces the said arm outwardly in such manner that the lug or projection 16 engages with the catch S on the bottom of the cover and holds the cover in the closed position.

In opening the box or casing the ball 20 is grasped by the thumb and finger and pulled outwardly, so as to stretch the cord 22, and released in such manner that the contraction of the cord 22 will cause the ball 20 to strike the button or head 18 on the spring-catch 13, and this operation will detach the arm 14 of said spring-cateh from the catch 8 0n the cover 6, and said cover will be released, and the iigu re 23 will be thrown upwardly by the spring by which it is supported, as shown in Fig. 1.

My improved toy is simple in construction and operation, and the manipulation of the ball 20, so as to strike the button or head 18 of the springeatch 13, is designed to amuse and entertain children;v and it will be apparent that changes in and modifications of the construction described may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.

Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A toy, comprising a box or easing, a cover hinged to one side of the top thereof, a springsupported figure mounted in said box or casing, a slot or opening formed in one side of said box or casing, an angular catch mounted in said slot or opening, one arm of which projects inwardly and upwardly, and the other outwardly, the inner inwardly-projecting arm being adapted to operate in connection with a catchsecured to the under side of the hinged covenand the outwardly-d ireeted arm thereof being provided with a disk or head, and an elastic cord secured to the front of the box or casing adjacent to said opening, and a ball through which said cord is passed, substantially as described.

2. A toy consisting of a box or easing provided with a hinged cover, a spring-supported figure mounted in said box or casing, a springcateh connected with the front of the box or casing and adapted to operate in connection with a catch secured to the cover for holding the latter in a closed position, and a ball provided with an elastic cord which is passed loosely therethrough, the ends of the cord be ing connected with the box or casing adjacent to said springeatch, substantially as shown and described.
