MUSICAL TOY.

Be it known that I, MICHAEL KAUFMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Musical Toys; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the characters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this application, and represent, in

This invention relates to an improvement in musical toys and particularly to that class which includes a series of reeds with a rotor by which the reeds are sounded.

The object of this invention is a simple arrangement of parts which permits of the device being operated in either direction so that it is not liable to become disordered,

- and the invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts as hereinafter described and particularly recited in the claims.

In carrying out my invention I employ a casing 5 which may be of any approved design, here represented as a phonograph cabinet. Fixed in the casing is a plate 6 through which a horizontal shaft 7 extends, the shaft being provided with a crank handle 8. In the plate is mounted a series of reeds 9 arranged radially to the shaft 7 and fixed to the shaft is a picker ll) having two outwardly-offset lingers 11 and 12. This picker is held close against the face of the plate (3 by a spring 13. The length of the reeds or the diameter of the disk is such that the ends of the reeds will be engaged by the fingers 11 or 12 when the shaft is rotated. The fingers of the picker being outwardly-oifset, form cams, one of which rides Specification of Letters Patent.

beneath the points of the reeds when the shaft is turned in one direction, while the other finger rides over the reeds, and vice versa, when the shaft is turned in the opposite direction, whereby the points of the reeds are lifted by the fingers 11 or 12, according to the direction in which the shaft is being turned and after lifting the reed drops them off so as to snap them to roduce sound. This toy is simple to manu-acture, is not liable to get out of order, and by Varying the tones of the reeds a pleasing combination of sounds may be secured.

I claim:

1. A musical toy comprising a casing, a plate mounted therein, a shaft mounted in the casing and extending through the said plate at right angles thereto, a series of reeds mounted in the said plate radially to the axis of said shaft, and a picker-cam fixed to said shaft and provided with two reverselyoperating outwardly-offset fingers, one of which rides beneath the points of the reeds andvsnaps them, and the other rides over the same, without effect, according to the direction in which the shaft is turned.

2. A musical toy comprising a casing, a plate mounted therein, a shaft mounted in the casing and extending through the said plate at right angles thereto, a series of reeds mounted in the said plate radially to the axis of said shaft, and a picker-cam fixed to said shaft and provided with two reverselyoperating outwardly-offset lingers, one of which rides beneath the points of the reeds and snaps them, and the other rides over the same, without effect, according to the direction in which the shaft is turned, and a spring on said shaft tending to force the picker against said plate.
