JOHN F. MILLER, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR OF THREE-FOURTI-IS TO JOHN C. HAMILTON, NOAH J. OLODFELTER, AND JOHN L. GREEN, OF
SAME PLACE.
PLOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 606,895, dated July 5, 1898.
Application filed July 12, 1897. Renewed June 2, 1898. Serial No. 682,410. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN F. MILLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flows; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in plows, the object being to provide novel wheel attachments therefor to lighten the draft strain and loosen up and rid the share of accumulated soil.
WVith this and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel constructions and combinations of parts hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
' The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a rear perspective view of a plow embodying my invention. Figs. 2 and 3 are detail perspective views of the front and rear wheel attachments.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents the frame or stock of the plow, comprising the beam 2, stilts or handles 3, and a longitudinal runner 4, connecting said parts. 5 is the plowshare, 6 the colter, and 7 the moldboard, all constructed in the usual manner.
My invention consists in the application to the plow of the wheel or roller attachments 8 9. The wheel or roller of the attachment 8 is journaled in a bracket 9, carried by an arm 10, said arm being constructed of a flat strip of spring metal and twisted so that its front end 1O extends vertically and substantially at right angles to the body portion and lower end thereof, to which the roller-bracket is attached. This arm is secured at the front of the beam 2 by an angularly-disposed clevis 11, while the end of the arm carrying the 5 roller extends rearwardly and outwardly, so
that said roller has position a little in advance of the plow-point.
The ends 9 9 of the bracket-arm 9 are bent in reverse directions, and the latter has journaled to it a roller 12, which is disposed on a line between the runner 4L and moldboard 7 and immediately in rear of the latter. The body or central portion of this arm ext-ends between the stilts 3 and is secured to the base of the beam'by a clevis 13, while the upper roller serves to sustain the weight of the plow,
and thus removes the strain from the hips of the draft-animal.
The spring metal of which the frontbracketarm 10 is constructed permits the roller attached thereto to give or yield when encountering obstructions and when passing over uneven ground. When this spring bracketarm yields, the plow-beam vibrates in accordance therewith, thus loosening the furrow soil on the moldboard and ridding it of accumulated soil.
From the above description it will be seen that I have provided a simple, cheap, and efiective construction of wheel or roller attachment adapted for connection with any plow and capable of being readily and conveniently applied to convert an ordinary hand-plow into a wheel-plow.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. In combination with a plow, an attachment therefor com prising a bracket-arm extending between the stilts and havingits ends bent in reverse directions, a wheel or roller journaled in the lower end of the arm and disposed in rear of the moldboard, and a clevis engaging the arm at opposite sides of the point ofbend of the upper end thereof, and adj ustably securing the same to the plowbeam, substantially as described.
2. The combination in a plow, of the beam and stilts, a runner connecting the same, the share and attachment parts, a spring-metal bracket-arm secured to the front end of the beam and carrying a Wheel or roller, and a In testimony whereof I affix my signature second bracket-arm extending between the in presence of two Witnesses.
stilts, and havin its ends bent in reverse direetions, a rolier journaled in the lower end JOHN D L 5 of the arm, and clips securing the upper end Vituesses:
of the arm to the beam, substantially as de- JAMES A. XVALSH,
scribed. LESLIE A. PAYNE.
