TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, JQHN A. BASSETT, of Salem, in the county of Essex, and State of Massachusetts, have I invented a new and useful improvement in Absorbent and Capillary Material for Gas and Air Garburettors; and
I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
The object of this invention is to provide a cheap substitute for the more expensive capillary materials used as absorbents in gas and air carburettors, and to furnish a material which from its great" capillary power and extensivesuri'ace, will accomplish more perfectly the object in view. I
It consists in the use of the fibres of wood prepared in the peculiar manner as herein presented. These fibres are torn from the wood by suitable machinery, so that the fibrous structure is preserved in the direction of the length of the grain, thus giving the fullest capillary power; and being finely divided, affords a great surface as a carburetting material and absorbent 0f the hydro-carbon liquid. I prefertoyse it, when arranged in the carburetti'ng apparatus, so that the fibres are placed perpendicularly and partially immersed in the hydrocarbon liquid; but it may be used in mass as it is sold and used as filling for mattresses, its commercial name being fexcelsiort 7 Having thus described the nature of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- A An absorbent and capillary material for gas and air carburettors, composed of the substance described, and prepared substantially in the manner set forth.
