UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.v
lDAVID S. GRANT, OF METHUEN, MASSACHUSETTS.
PIPE-CUTTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 606,538, dated J' une 28, 1898.
4 v Application iiled February 7,1898. Serial NO- 66 9,325. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom t may concern:
Beit known that I, DAVID S. GRANT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Methu en, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pipe-Cutters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in pipe-cutters; and it consists of a frame having a hooked upper end, in bearings in which is journaled a hardened-steel cutter-disk combined with a longitudinally-adjustable and Yreversible cutter and roller carrying block having journaled in one end a pair of cutterdisks and in its opposite end a pair of rollers, said block being adjusted to and from the upper cutter-disk and the pipe to be cut by means of a screw-threaded shank, as will hereinafter be more Afully shown and described, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure l represents a side elevation of my improved pipe-cutter, showing the carryingblock in its normal position relative to the 'frame--that'is' with its rollers in operative position. Fig. 2 represents an edge View of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 represents a vertical section showing the position of the carrying-block reversed-that is, showing `the cutter-disks thereon in operative position; and Fig. 4 rep-v resents a cross-section on the broken line 4 4, shown in Fig. l.
Similar letters refer to similar parts wherever they occur on the different part-s of the drawings.
In the drawings, A represents the frame of the device, having a hooked upper end A', in
bearings in which is loosely journaled the `.hardened-steel cutter-disk B, as is common in devices of this kind.
On two opposite sides of the frame A are arranged guide-ribs A A", on which the carrier-block C is guided to and from the cutter -B by having angular extensions C C fitting against the rear portions of the guide-ribs A" A", as shown in Figs. l and 4.
The block C is detachably secured to a support D, preferably by means of a detachable pin d passing through the sides of the block C and a central projection on the said support D, asshown in the drawings.'
E is the handle, secured to or made integral "shown in Figs. l and 3.
with the shank E', which is guided in the lower tubular portion A3 of the frame A, as shown. The upper end e of said shank is screw-threaded, as shown, and made to work in a nut F, preferably inserted in a recess in the upper part of the tubular portion A3, as The upper end of the screw eis connected in a suitable manner to the part D, so as to cause the latter to be moved up and down during the rotary adjustment of the screw-threaded shank E e., as is common in pipe-cutting devices.
In one end of the carrier-block C are journaled the cylindrical rollers G G, andin the opposite end of said carrier-block are journaled the hardened-steel cutter-disks H l-I, as shown. T
In Figs. 1 and 2 the carrier-block C is shown in position with its rollers G G facing the upper disk cutter B and causing the pipe I, that is being cut, to be confined between said upper cutter B and the rollers G G during the pipe-cutting operation. This is the usual position of the carrier-block whenever there is room enough to swing the pipe-cutting device complete/ly around the pipe that is being cut, and by using the tool in this manner a pipe may readily be cut off without causing the edges at the cut to project outward, and consequently under ordinary conditions when the device may be swung freely in a complete revolution it is more advantageous to use the upper cutter B combined with the cylindrical pressure-rolls G G; but when the device cannot be swung completely around-such as in corners of a room, &c., where the device has to be oscillated or rocked forward and backit is preferable to use in connection with the upper cutter B a pair of disk cutters H H, and for such purpose I reverse the position of the carrier-block C, so that the cutter-disks H H shall be held opposite to the upper cutter B portions a a." when the upper projections C are liberated from the ribs A, and ivhen the bloek C is in this position it may readily he swung outward and diseonnected from the frame A, reversed, and connected to the lat-- terin suehreversed position, During,r the operation of removing the said block C from the frame A the pin d, which connects the said bloek to the support D, is Withdrawn.
Having thus fully described the nature, eonstruetion, and operation of niy invention, I wish to secure by Letters Patent and claim- 1. In a pipe-cutter, the combination with a frame having a disk cutter journaled in its upper end and provided on its opposite sides with longitudinal ribs having,` inclined slots or recesses formed intermediate their ends, ot a reversible carrier-block longitudinally adjustable on said fra-ine and having,r rollers in one end and cutter-disks in the other, said Carrier-block being provid ed with hooked eX- tensions arranged to engage the rear orouter faces of the ribs and adapted to be passed through the said slots or recesses therein to reverse the carrier-block, and means for adjusting` said reversible trame to and from the uppereutter-disk, substantially as described.
i. In a pipe-cutter, the combination with a frame having` a disk cutter journaled in its upper end and provided on its opposite sides ivith longitudinal ribs having inclined slots or recesses formed intermediate their ends, of a reversible carrier-block longitudinally adjustable on said frame and having rollers in one end and cutter-disks in the other, said carricr-lilloek being provided with hooked extensions arranged to engage the rear or outer faces of the ribs and adapted to be passed through the said slots or recesses therein to reverse the Carrier-block, a 'support detachably connected. to the Carrier-block, and a screw-threaded shank Workingr in a nut in the traine and siviveled in said support for adjusting` the position of the reversible block to and from the upper cutter, substantially as dcseribed.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
DAVID S. GRANT.
