Be it known that I, SAMUEL BOUTON, a citizen of the Republic of France, residing at the city of Philadelphia, in the county of Phila Myinvention, stated in general terms, consists of an air and vapor engine constructed and arranged in substantially the manner hereinafter described and claimed.
The nature and scope or characteristic features of my invention will be more fully understood from the following description,taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevational view of an air and vapor engine embodying main features of my invention. Fig. 2 is a top or plan view of the same, partly sectioned, on ahorizontal plane. Fig. 3 is an elevational view, enlarged and partly sectioned, of the left-hand end of the machine; and Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view, enlarged, of the vapor-chamber and connections.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the framework of the engine, in which is supported'the cylinder B, the fly-wheel O, and its crank-shaft O. rounded by the ordinary water-jacket B, and the crank-shaft G is attached by the connecting-rod C with the piston B in the usual manner. The cylinder-head d is provided with two ports I? and 61, each closed by preferably a spring-controlled conical valve 1) and d, respectively. wherein-the volatile or easily-vaporized liquid is stored. As illustrated in Fig. 4, the upper end of the mixing-chamber e is provided with an inlet 6, controlled by a springcontrolled valve 6 the inlet communicating with the open air or any suitable sourceof airsupply. The pipe b leading from the combustion end of the cylinder B, extends downward into the mixing-chamber 0 below the air-inlet c and directly above an opening or inlet f, controlled by a valve or cook f and leading to the reservoir f.
The spring-controlled valve 1) is so regulated that upon the out or exhaust stroke of the piston 13 the vacuum created in the cylinder B will cause the valve 1) to momentarily open and exhaust a charge from the mixingchamber into the cylinder. The air-valve e is likewise so regulated that it will open 1noinentarily when a partial vacuum is created in the mixing-chamber upon the opening of the charging-valve b and will permit of the momentary inflow of air tothe said mixingchamber. The cylinder B is also provided with a port g, leading to an ignition apparatus, consisting of a nipple g, surrounding the port and adapted to be heated to redness by a burner 9 as indicated in Fig. 3 of the drawings.
-- Upon the shaft 0 of the engine is secured a gear-wheel D, meshing with the gear-Wheel D, to which is eccentrieally pivoted a connecting-rod D adapted to actuate a slide D carrying a finger or projection D adapted to strike against the stem of the valve d, and thereby open said valve directly after the explosion of the air and vapor in the combusher, and also causes a charge of vapor to pass from the reservoir f to the mixing-chamber, the vaporization of the liquid in the reservoir f being assisted or accelerated by the partial vacuum in the reservoir. Upon the in or return stroke of the piston, the valve 1) being closed, the charge is compressed and a portion is forced through the port g to the ignition apparatus, and thereby exploded. At the moment of explosion the port 61 is opened and the exhaust or spent products of combustion escape to the exhaust-pot 61 Having thus described the nature and objects of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
