Be it known that I, JOSEPH ROBISON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Greenbush, Rensselaer county, New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vaporizing and Ignition Devices; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear,

drawing o`n"rod 10-- will 'more orless open or close valve 10 and increase or diminish the oil Supplyt In chamber-1 is the vaporizer 1l attached preferably to casing 1 and arranged'to receive the charge of 'oil and air entering it by means of the valve 3, its exit end or overow point being elevated or arranged so as to prevent any unvaporized oil from escaping from itafter the vaporizer and igniter 11 is once sufficiently heated by the explosions in the cylinder, thus forming a pocket in which the oil is retained until fully vaporized, the vaporized oil and air passing out ofthe vaporizer and into the ignition device 12 which device is preferably a bent tube 12 attached to chamber 1 preferablyby screwing it into a threaded opening therein, the upper end of the ignition tube vhaving a regulating tube 13 attached to it, in order that the time of Iiring may be regulated. If the firing takes place too early I shorten vthetube 13 and if too late I lengthen it, but after the time of firing has been once correctly ascertained and the tube made of the proper length to govern the flring, Iclose the tube 13 preferably by a cap as it then needs no more attention. The tube 13 is lengthened by turning the cap upward, and

The operation is as follows: The burner 16 being set in operation, the iiame is allowed to burn until the ignition tube is heated to redness and until the inner vaporizing tube 11 is heated sufficiently to vaporize the first few charges of oil. The fly Wheel of the engine is then revolved until the piston makes one or more suction strokes. As the piston makes a suction stroke,the suction opens or draws down valve 3, the stem 4 and the plunger 5, the plunger acting like a pump, compressing the charge of oil in chamber 18 and forcing it through port 5 down the tubular stem 4, and out through channels 3 in valve 3, and causing it to be sprayed against the heated sides of vaporizer 11, and at the same time a charge of air is sucked into the vaporizer 11 through opening 19 and the oil, vapor and air are thus mixed in the vaporizer and pass out of it and into tube 12, chamber 1 and the cylinder. 0n the compression strokeof the piston, the mixed oil vapor and air are compressed and forced back again into ignition chamber 12 and against its red hot sides Where it is ignited creating an explosion Which operates the piston. To the opening 1 is fixed the usual exhaust Valve used With ordinary gas or oil engines and as their construction is Well known, and they being in common use, a detailed description thereof is deemed unnecessary. On the exhaust stroke of the piston the products of combustion are discharged from the exhaust valve in the usual manner. As the explosions continue in the cylinder and in chamber 1 the heat engendered is sufficient to' keep vaporizer 11 sufficiently heated to cause it to vaporize any and all oil entering it, the tube 11 acting as a superheatcr as Well as a vaporizer, and after the engine has run for a short time vaporizer and igniter 11 is heated by the explosions in the cylinder to such a degree that it becomes a vaporizer and igniter combined, first vaporizing any oil that may enter it on the suction stroke of the pis ton, and igniting the mixed vapor and air on the compression stroke, and When so heated the temporary burner 16 may be shut off entirely and the engine continue to run. As vaporizer and igniter 11 is open to the inrush of the products of combustion of each explosion in the cylinder and is also externally surrounded by them, its full surface both exterior and interior are acted on directly by the heat in said products, thus allowing of its being quickly heated to the degree required. The object of having the exit end of vaporizer and igniter 11 project into the supplementary or outer igniter 12 is, that this end may become heated from the external burner 16 at the same time the outer or sup- 'plementary igniter 12 is being heated and to also provide an extended surface upon which to vaporize all oil entering vaporizer and igniter 11. The form of vaporizer 11 as shown may be modified if desired, as I do not confine myself to the form shown.
Having described my invention so that those skilled in the art to Which it appertains may make and use the same, What l claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. ln combination with an oil or vapor engine, afchambered inlet valve as -3- having a tubular stem as i, a plunger as -5-, the plunger and stem being movably set in a chamber as -1S-,' a port as -5- in the valve stem and an oil supply pipe arranged to supply the chamber With oil substantially as described.
2. In a gas, oil or vapor engine, a chamber attached to the engine cylinder and formi-ng practically an extension thereof, said chamber containing a vaporizing device and having an oil supplying valve arranged to supply the vaporizing device With a charge of air and oil, and having an ignition device and a source of heat arranged to heat it, a portion at least of the vaporizing device being inside the ignition device and arranged to receive a part at least of its heat therefrom, and arranged so that on the suction stroke of the piston a charge of oil and of air Will pass into and the oil be vaporized by the vaporizer, the mixture of oil vapor and air pass into the engine cylinder and on the compression stroke of the piston be forced into the ignition and vaporizing device and ignited substantially as described.
3. An oil feeding valve for oil or vapor engines consisting of a chambered valve having a tubular valve stem in communication with said chamber, the valve stem passing into a chambered body and arranged to move therein, and having a port leading from the chamber in said body to the chamber in the valve and a plunger in the chamber in said body arranged to move With the stem and leave the port open, and an open space aboutthe valve stem in which the plunger moves and an oil supplypipe arranged to supply oil to said open space and arranged so that When the valve is opened the plunger will compress the oil and force it into said valve and out of the same, said valve having outlet openings substantially as described.

In a gas oil or vapor engine, a combined vaporizer and ignition device located in the engine cylinder and a second orsupplemental ignition device located outside the cylinder, the combined vaporizer and ignition device entering the supplemental ignition device and arranged to receive a portion of its heat through the same and having a source of heat outside the engine cylinder arranged to heat the supplementary ignition device, the combined vaporizer and ignition device having its overflow point arranged to prevent the escape of all liquid oi1 therefrom and having an intake valve arranged to supply oil to the `combined. vaporizer and ignition device said combined device being arranged to receive IOO IIO
the heat from the explosions in the cylinder directly on its inner and outer surfaces and y to be heated thereby to a degree sufficient to ignite the vapor and air in the cylinder on the compression stroke ofthe piston substantially as described.
5. In a gas, oil or vapor engine an ignition and vaporizing device located in the engine cylinder and a supplemental ignition device located outside the cylinder and a source of heat arranged to heat the supplemental ignition device the internal ignition and Vaporizing device being arranged to receive a JOSEPH ROBISON.
