P. DALLINGER.
PIREPROOF MASK.
Patented June 28,1898.
. INVENTOR WITNESSES: diam mag ATTORN EYJ,
constructed substantially as hereinafter Uni-Ten frarns PHILIP DALLINGER, on NEW YORK, N. v.
FIREPROOF MASK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 606,379, dated June 28, 1898.
- Application filed January 27,1898. Serial No. 668,217. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, PHILIP DALLINGER, a citizen of the United States, residing in New York, (borough of Brooklyn,) State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fireproof Masks, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make anduse the same.
This invention relates to fireproof masks such as are worn by firemen in the pursuit of their calling as a protection from smoke and flame.
The object is to provide a fireproof mask which will be simple in construction and easily and quickly put on and removed and which will afford perfect protection from smoke and flame.
The invention consists of a fireproof mask shown and described, and defined in the claims.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by the same letters of reference in each of the views, and in which- Figure 1 is a front view of my improved fireproof mask, a portion of the shell being broken away to show the construction; and Fig. 2 is a vertical central section thereof.
In the drawings, A represents my improved fireproof mask, which is preferably made of a light metal frame or shell and covered with asbestos or other suitable material that is a non-conductor of heat. Thisshell is constructed in two parts a a, which are hinged together, preferably, at the top, so as to permit the two parts to be opened and the mask placed over the head of the wearer. A pin and hook or other suitable fastening device is provided at the lower part of the mask to secure the two parts together while in use. The body portion of the mask is preferably spherical or globe shaped and is provided with.
a downwardly-extending neck portion a for the protection of the neck of the wearer.
At the upper portion of the mask is an opening for the admission of air to the wearer. This opening is formed by cutting a slit in the metal and forcing the metal upon one side thereof upwardly, so as to form a projection a having curved sides, and a semicircular opening a through which the air necessary for the wearer can enter.
A sponge a or other suitable absorbent material may be placed in the opening a and when saturated withwater will prevent. the entrance of smoke and flame into the interior of the mask.
In the front of the mask, conveniently lo cated for the eyes, are arranged two viewopenings C C, which are protected by glass covers and of suitable size and shape for the purpose.
Centrally arranged at each side of the mask is an ear-opening D, which is covered by an ear-protector D, formed of rubber or other suitable material.
This ear-protector is secured to the inner side of the mask in any suitable manner and projects inwardly a suitable distance, so as to press firmly against the ear of the wearer. The protector D is formed, preferably, with a narrow head d and an enlarged knob-shaped head 01, in which is a circular opening (1 communicating with the exterior of the mask through the ear-opening D.
To apply the device, it is only necessary to swing the parts on their hinge and place the mask over the head and secure the pinandhook connection.
Having fullydescribed my invention, I
claim as new anddesire to secure by Letters and their inner ends being adapted to be connected with the ear of the user, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. An improved fireproof mask, comprising the body portion provided with ear-openings, in combination with inwardly-extending earprotectors secured over said ear-openings and projecting therefrom within the interior of the body, said ear-protectors having a narrow neck forming a passage communicating with the exterior of the mask through the ear-openings and being provided with a hollow knobshaped head having an opening in the inner face thereof, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. A fireproof maslgconstructed of two halfspheres suitably hinged together, a curved projection provided With a ventilating-opening containing a sponge, the body portion of said mask being provided with view-openings and ear-openings, an inwardly-extending earprotector secured over said ear-openings 0011* structed of a hollow knob-shaped head hav- PHILIP DALLINGER.
