J. W. BEAR. NON-REPILLABLE BOTTLE.
I 605,843- Patented June 21, 1898.
UNITED STATES PATENT Q FICE.
JOHN W. BEAR, or IIDELL, iow
NON-REFILLABLE BOTTLE.
SPECIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 605,843, dated June 21, 1898.
Application filed March 8, 1898. Serial N0. 673,040. (N0 model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JOHN W. BEAR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Udell, in the county of Appanoose and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Non-Refillable Bottles; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention has relation to non-refillable bottles; and the object is to provide a bottle ,of this character which cannot be refilled and sold as an original package without detection.
. With this object in view the invention 0011- sists in certain features of construction and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional viewof a portion of a bottle illus trating my invention. spective view of the bolt-casing, showing the bolt projected. Fig.- 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same parts, the bolt being retracted and a key being shown with its bit in engagement with the bolt in the act of shooting the same; and Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the bolt.
In said drawings, 1 denotes the neck of a bottle, provided near its mouth with an interior annular groove v2 and an outer weakening-groove 3.
4 denotes the cork, which is adapted to be driven into the neck below said grooves.
5 denotes the bolt-casing, which is adapted to be placed in the neck of the bottle and have one of its ends engaged with the groove 2.
This casing is provided with a keyhole'6 in its top and with a notch or opening 7 in its side.
8 denotes a bolt which has a sliding engagementin said casing, and 9 denotes a key adapted to be inserted through the keyhole of the casing and shoot the bolt into the groove 2.
1O denotes a filling placed on top of the easing after the bolt has been shot.
In operation afterthe bottle has been filled the cork is driven into the' neck below the Fig. 2 is a detail per-' grooves, and the lock-casing is placed in position in the neck with one of its ends in the groove 2. The key is now inserted through the keyhole and turned, which forces the bolt outward into the groove at a point diametrically opposite the point of engagement of the lock-casing with the groove. At this instant the spring-tongue 11 on the side of the bolt springs out laterally and engages the wall of a slot in the side of the casing, and thereby prevents the retraction of the bolt by a tool or implement. The neck of the bottle above the lock is now filled with any suitable material, such as wax, cement, or the like.
Although I have specifically described the construction and relative arrangement of the several elements of my invention, I do not de sire to be confined to the same,as such changes or modifications may be made as clearly fall within the scope of my invention without departing from the spirit thereof.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
i 1. A non-refillable bottle having an internal annular groove in its neck, a lock-casing placed in said. neck with one end in said groove, a bolt having a sliding engagement in said casing, and a key for projecting the ,bolt into said groove at a point opposite to the engagement of the casing with said groove,
- substantially as set forth.
2. A non-refillable bottle having an internal annular groove in its neck, a lock-casing placed in said neckwith one end in said groove and provided with a notch in-itsv side, a bolt havinga sliding engagement in said casing and provided with a marginal springtongue adapted to engage said notch when the bolt is projected, and a key for projecting saidbolt, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
