BURGLAR-ALARM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 605,7 79, dated June 14, 1898.

of the inventionpsuch as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My inventi'on'has relation to improvements in mechanical burglar-alarms and the object is to provide a simple, cheap, and reliable device of this class; and to this end the novelty consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of the same, as will be hereinafter morefully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings the same reference-numerals indicate the same parts of the invention. v Figure 1 is a diagrammatic plan illustrating my mechanical burglar-alarm in which a separate alarm-bell is used for eachdoor or window, and Fig. 2 is a modification of the same in which a single alarm-bell is employed;
for any number of doors and windows.
1 represents an ordinary mechanical alarmbell the engagement-shaft of which is'provided with a controlling-arm 2, which vibrates with said shaft. I
3 represents a vertical tripilever the free end of which supports the arm 2 and preventsits vibrating.
4 is a spiral spring attached to one side of the lever 3, and 5 is a flexible cord attached to the other side, from whence it is ledover a series of small grooved pulleys 6 6, and from the last one of these it is led in a direct line withthe line of movementof the window A the lower sash be raised or the upper sash lowered, the cord 6 will'be slackened and the spring 4 will draw the trip-lever from under the arm 2, which releases the alarm.
12 represents a screw-eye fixed in the window-frame at approximately the same point from the pulley nearest the wi'ndow,'and when it is desirable to use the window without sounding the alarm the hook 9 is detached from the screw-eye 7 and attached to the screw-eye 12 in the frame, which still preserves the tension on the cord and prevents the alarm sounding and at the same time 'allows a free use of the window. 7
The same arrangement is used for the door 13 as described for the window A, and in practice I prefer to locate the alarm I in the bedroom of a house, from which the cord can be conducted by the pulleys to the different points all over the house that it it is necessary to protect, and it may even be conducted to outbuildings-such as barns, chickenhouses, and the likeas any tampering with the cord will sound the alarm. V
It will-be understood that if the cord be pulled instead of slackened the same result will take place that is, if the cord be pulled it will draw the trip-lever 3 forward against the tension of the spring 4 and release the arm 2 to start the alarmso that in the case of outbuildings the cord need not be secreted or hidden, as its very publicity adds to its in the first instance.
On the modification shown in Fig. 2 the cord instead of being attached to the triplever 3 is connected to one end of the bar 3, pivoted in a fixed bracket 14, the spiral spring 4 being connected to the opposite end of the bar 3, as shown. 15 represents a rod pivoted to a bracket 16, and it extends horizontally across the path of a series of the bars 3, so thatits free end, which is formed with a retaining-recess 17, engages the free end of the arm 2 in such a manner as to support the rod 15 in a horizontal position, as shown, and at the same time prevents the arm 2 "from vibrating. A series of these bars 3is mounted in the bracket 14:, corresponding to the num- IOG her of points to be protected, and it will readily be seen that if any one of the cords be slaekened its spring a will retract it, causing its bar 3 to push the rod 15 from out of the path of the arm 2 and release the alarm.
Although I have specifically described the construction and relative arrangement of the several elements of my invention, I do not desire to be confined to the same, as such changes or modifications may be made as clearly fall within the scope of my invention without departing from the spirit thereof.

A burglar-alarm, comprising the hell 1 provided with the controlling-arm 2, the triplever 3 having its free end projecting into the path of the free end of said arm 2, the spring 4 connected to one side of said lever, and the cord 5 connected at one end to the opposite side of said lever and having its opposite end extending under tension over a fixed pulley 6 thence over a pulley 6 mounted on the movable bottom sash and its immediate end provided with a hook 9 adapted to be removably secured to the upper sash whereby a movement of either sash will slacken the cord to release the trip-lever 3 and sound an alarm, substantially as shown and described.
