The object of my invention is to provide a simple, cheap, and efficient combination-lock particularly adapted for securing bicycles.

My invention consists of a permutationpadlock comprising a suitable casing having suitable tumblers mounted within it, a removable adjustable back plate mounted in the casing and formed with a gate or notch which registers with the gates of the tumblers When the combination is set, and a bolt adapted to be engaged by the tumblers. The back plate is adjustable in the casing to change the com: binationof the lock. The bolt is preferably attached to the back plate by a chain or bolt and is formed with a flanged head for COIlfilling the back plate.

I will describe my invention with reference to the accompanying drawings and afterward point out the novelty with more particularity In said drawings, Figure l is a vertical sectional view of myimproved combination-lock. 5 and 9 are attached to their respective shafts or arbors in such position that their gates will coincide when the hands or indicators 4 and'S indicate a particular time or relative position with relation to the dial-face 2 of the casing. WVhen the combination has been set, the removable back 15 is inserted, with the gate 16 registering with the gates of the tumblers. The bolt 20 is then inserted and the tumblers revolved, securely locking the bolt in the casing. It will be observed that the flanged head 26 engages the edge of the cylindrical casing and prevents the back being pushed in too far. The ends of the

4 and 8 have the proper relative position, and the time or position of the hands upon the dial at which the combination will be set can be changed at will by changing the position of the removable back 15 in the casing.

In place of the chain 24 connecting the bolt withthe removable back plate I may employ a U-shaped bar or hasp 30, as shown in Fig.

.4, in which case the bar can be rigidly attached to the bolt 20 and Will be formed with an end 31, adapted to engage in an opening in the back plate, and a flange 32 to hold the parts in proper relative position.

It will be observed that the bolt 20 is formed with a plain smooth back. When changing the combination, the backplate is removed, the tumblers are moved to the desired position by means of the hands, and the back plate is then placed in position, care being taken to bring its gate into line with the gates on the tumblers. If now'the bolt be placed in the gates with the smooth side inward, it will hold the parts in place, while the position of the hands on the dial is carefully observed and fixed in mind. The bolt may then be removed, put back in reversed or looking position, and the hands turned, locking the bolt. The flange of the bolt will then hold the back plate in position and prevent its re- 5 moval. It will of course be clear that the back plate must fit the casing so snugly that it will not be accidentally moved after the lock is locked.

The back plate is adjustable for changing lo the combination of the lock.

Having thus fully described my invention, thefollowing is what I claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

1. A permutation -padlock comprising a [5 suitable casing, tumblers movably mounted Within the casing, an adjustable back plate supported in the casing and formed with a gate or notch with which the tumblers register, and a bolt adapted to be engaged by the tumblers, as set forth.

2. A permutation padlock comprising a suitable casing, suitablycontrolled rotary tumblers supported in the casing and formed with gates or notches, a removable adjustable back plate formed with a gate or notch adapted to register with the gates of the tumblers, a bolt adapted to enter the gates of the back plate and tumblers, and a connection connecting the bolt with a part of the look, as set forth.

3. In a permutatiompadlock, the combination with a casing, suitable tumblers mounted therein and held against removal, a removable adjustable back plate having a notch or 5 gate, and a bolt adapted to enter said notch or gate and engage said tumblers and having a flange adapted to engage the back plate, the tumblers holding the bolt and the bolt holding the back plate in the casin g, substantially 0 as set forth.

4. A permutation padlock comprising a suitable casing, suitable controlling-tumblers rotatably mounted Within the casing and formed with suitable gates or notches, a removable adjustable back plate formed with a gate or notch, a bolt formed with a flanged head adapted to engage the back plate, a head upon the removable back plate, and a suitable connection connecting the bolt with the head on the back plate, substantially as set forth.

5. In a permutation-padlock, the combina tion of a suitable casing having a circular opening at back, a circular back plate adapted to engage therewith held from rotation only by close contact with its sides and capable of being set in an unlimited number of positions therein, tumblers held Within the casing, the tumblers and back plate having corresponding gates or notches and a suitable bolt adapted to engage said gates or notches, substantially as set forth.

V 6. In a permutation-padlock, the combination of a casing having a dial-face, a plurality of arbors having individual hands adapted to move over said dial, rotatable tumblers fixed to the separate arbors, a circular back plate engaging the rear of the casing and capable of removal from and return to any position therein and held from turning only by close contact with its walls, the back plate and the tumblers having suitable corresponding gates or notches, and a bolt having a retaining chain or member and adapted to enter said gates or notches, substantially as set forth.

'7. In a permutation-padlock, the combination of a suitable casing, tumblers therein, a back plate removable to enable the changing of the combination and having a flanged head adapted to engage the edge of the casing and
