A. W. WALKER.
COOKING STOVE.
No. 605,303. Patented June 7,1898.
' f, it having, as shown, a lug 4, saiddamper,
sachusetts, have invented an Improvement UNITED STATES PATENT i OFFICE,
. ARTHUR \V. WVALKER, OF MALDEN, MASSACHUSETTS.
. COOKING-STOVE.
SPECIFJZCATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 605,303, dated June 7, 1898.
Application filed January I '7, 1 8 98.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ARTHUR W. \VALKER of Malden, county of Middlesex, State of Masin Cooking-Stoves, of which the following de-. scription, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters and. figures on the drawings representing like parts.
Prior to this invention most cooking-stoves have been provided with two dampers, one of which opens a direct draft, as when the fire is started, while the other, controls the circulation of the products of combustion in the fines of the stove for baking, &c.
I have experimented with and have prod need a stove wherein one and the same damper not only controls the direct draft, but also the baking-draft.
Figure 1, in top view, shows a cookingstove containing my improvement, part of the top being broken out to show the interior construction. Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional detail in the dotted line :0, Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a partial section in the dotted line m, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 shows-the damper detached." Fig.5 shows the damper-actuator; and Fig. 6, an enlarged detail of the meeting ends of the damper-actuator. r
The stove-body A, having the box-like extension A, constituting a flue A and the stove-top B, extended at B to cover said box, said top having a collar, B on which is fitted the smoke-pipe B and having suitablecovers 13 and the top oven-plate 0, having between, it and the under side of the stovetop walls 0' o to constitute lines to directthe heat from the fire-box along the side of the wall 0 in the direction of the arrow 2 into the half of the flue-space d under the oven and thence into the space 0 into the flue-space A are and may be all as usual. The fine-4 space A has at its left-hand side, viewing Fig. 3, a wall 6, provided with a direct-draft opening a and a baking-draft opening 6 the two openings being separated by the curved wall 0 The wall e is inclined somewhat from a perpendicular, and at the bottom of said wall, at its side next the flue-space A there is a guideway 2 (see Fig. 3) to receive the lower flaring edge or foot 3 of the damper Serial Noseaeer. on model.)
owing to the inclination of said wall a, lying against said wall by a force due to the grav ity of the damper, thus, making a close joint, and at the same time the footentering said groove 2 enables the side of said wall to constitute a guide for the damper in all its movements. This damper is the only one used, and it is made to cooperate with and normally cover the draft-opening e and more or less of the baking-draft opening 6 The extension 13 of the stove-top is pro vided with a slot g, and the underside ofthe top has connected to it by suitable screws 9 two guideways g 9 in which is placed a damper-mover, shown as composed of two slidebars h h, eachhaving at one end a like finger 7L2 and an ear 7L3, having a hole 5, said hole receiving the shank of a knob 7L5. These bars h and h are passed through said slot into said guideways, and then the ears are overlapped with a finger k at either side of thelu g 4 of the damper, and then the shank of the knob is inserted in the holes 5 of the ears, thus connecting the damper-mover together, and thereafter by pushing said damperonover to the right or leftone or the other finger h? becomes the mover for the damper, so that by this loose connection with thedamper it may be moved in either direction, as required. The top of the stove near said slot is marked Bake, Check, Kindle,
and the knob is shown at Bake, and in such position the damper uncovers the most of the baking-draft opening, so that the full efiect of the heat of the stove may be ntil- .ized for baking.
Should the heat be too great for baking, or if it is desired to check the regular draft of the stove, as when itis closed up for the night, it being desired to keep the fire low or over night, then the knob may be moved to theposition marked Check]? and in such position the opening 2 will be partially closed.
If, however, a fire is to be kindled, then the. knob is moved fully to the right opposite'theword Kindle, in which position thedamper is less for the girl who runs the stove to learn, and she is not liable to run the stove on Wron g principles.
Having fully described my invention, What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patout, is-- 1. In a stove, a wall interposed in the path of the smoke from the fire 'to the smoke-pipe and provided with two openings, combined; with one damper to substantially cover either or both said openings, substantially as de-' scribed.
2. In a stove, an inclined partition or wall located in the path of the smoke from the fire to the smoke-pipe, and provided with a directdraft opening and a baking-draft opening, combined with one damper cooperating with both said openings, substantially as described.
3. In a stove, an inclined partition or wall= located in the path of the smoke from the firebox to the smoke-pipe, said wall being pro-' vided with a direct-draft opening and a baking-draft opening and having a groove at the base of said partition or Wall, combined Witha damper, the lower edge of which enters and slides in said groove, said damper resting by its gravity on and being free to slide on said partition or wall, substantially as described.
4. The combination with a stove provided with a slot for a damper-knob, and a damper located below said slot, of a damper-operator composed of a jointed two-part bar cooperating with said damper to move it and at the same time keep said slot closed, substantially as described.
5. The combination with a stove, of a damper having a lug, combined with a damper operator made as a sliding bar having two fingers embracing said lug, substantially as described. 6. A stove having a straight longitudinal partition or wall provided with a direct-draft opening and a baking-draft opening arranged side by side, and other walls 0 and c to form fiues, combined with a damper moving against one side of said partition and means to move it in a straight line-to cover or to uncover the direct-draft opening anduncover more or- ARTHUR W.
