UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN F. BRAZELTON, OF BUTTE, MONTANA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO GEORGE G. ENGLISH, OF SAME PLACE.
SCALE-WEIGHT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 604,715, dated May 31, 1898.
' Application filed May 6,1897. Serial No. 635,417. (No model.)
To whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN F. BRAZELTON, of Butte,in the county of SilverBow and State of Montana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Scale-VVeights, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide I a scale-weight which will closely hug the weight-bar and which cannot be dislodged by any movement of the scale consequent upon removing objects from the scale to the floor.
Another object of the invention is to construct a scale-weight, especially a. bottom weight for a scale, which will be simple, durable, and economic and will compel all of the upper weights, although of the ordinary type, to be inclined in direction of the weight-bar.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
Figure 1 is a plan view of the improved weight, and Fig. 2 is a transverse section taken substantially on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
The improved weight is adapted as a beamweight only or as a support for other weights that may be needed.
The improved weight A may be of the usual form and constructed of any suitable material.
The weight A is provided with the usual crotch or slot 10 to receive the weight-bar of the scale. The weight, however, is made thicker at one side than at the other, the thicker side being that in which the crotchis made, the thinner side being at the inner end of the crotch. The thickness of the weight is so distributed that the bottom 11 will be straight, while the top 12 will be inclined downwardly in direction of the inner end of the crotch or slot, as shown particularly in Fig. 2.
The improved weight is placed upon the weight-bar from left to right, it being customary to place ordinary weights on the scalebar from right to left. The preponderance of material being at the right-hand side of the weight, the weight will not leave its position when properly placed relative to the weightbar. The ordinary weights may be placed upon the improved weight, and by reason of the upper inclined surface of the lowermost or improved weight, upon which said ordinary weights are supported, will be given an inclination in direction of the weight-bar to such an extent that they cannot be shaken from their position under ordinary usage of a scale. As the bottom surface of the improved lowermost weight of the scale is perfectly flat, it will rest firmly and securely in the disk usually attached to the weight-bar. Furthermore, it is evident that the lowermost weight being placed upon the scale-bar in a reverse direction from the weights it is adapted to support the supported or upper weights will serve in a measure to hold the improved i11- clined lowermost weight in proper position.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A scale-weight provided with a crotch or slot and having a preponderance of weight at the side in which the slot or crotch is produced, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A scale-wei ht provided with a slot or crotch for the. reception of a scale-bar, said weight being made heavier at that side in which the crotch or slot is produced, the up per surface of said weight being inclined in direction of the inner end of said slot or crotch, as and for the purpose set forth.
3. A scale-weight having a slot formed therein and having an inclined face, the said face slanting inward from the outer end of the slot.
JOHN F. BR-AZELTON.
