TO ALL WHGM XT MAY CONGERN A Be it known that-Awe, LEONARD ANDREWS and IRA Annnnws, both of Biddeford, :in the county-o' York, and State of Murine, rhave invented e new end improved Helve Hemmer; und We hereby decla-re the following to be a, full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others to make and use our invention, reference being had to theaccompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which# Figure i ist. side elevation of our invention.
Eigure 2, ein end elevation of the same.
Figure 3 illustrates the method of securing the anvil.
The seme letters refer to like parte in each of the figures,
'One of the objections te the use oi' helve hammers in common hlztckslniths shops, or in shops where iron is worked, where not more than one or' two persons are employed, is that the attention of two er more persons ie required to drive the machinea This is the case where the machine is moved 'by hand, or whore it is operated by water or steam; in the former case the services of one person being necessary to turn the machine, in the letter to zittend the water gate or steam valve, e, second to manipulate the iron submitted to the operation of the machine. One ofthe objects of our invention is to produce e. combination of machinery for this means, which can be operated by a. single person at the seme; time that he superintends the iron submitted to thc hemmen. f
Reference to the drawings will show the construction of our invention.
A B show two upright frames, C the post upon. which the anvil is located. In the frame, B, is set the crank-shaft, a, having the balance-wheel, Z. The crank-shaft is connected with the trendle, e, by the linlr, d. The treniile oscillnt-es upon the cross-bar, e, -which turns in holes mede neer the bottom of the frame, A, as seen in the drawing. The end of the treadle to which the foot is applied is near the base of the post, C, upon which the :invii is placed; thus the saine person operating the machine een manipulate the iron. Itigdly attached to the crank-shaft, a, is the truck, f; from this e band communicates with the truck, It, on the shaft, t', in the frame, A; thus the motion received from the treodle and imparted to the crank-shaft, a, is given to the shaft, Upon this shuft,z', is the cam, it, rigidly attached thereto. The hammer, m, swing-s ou the bar, n, in the top part of kthe frame, B. Over the com, 7c, the hummer.' has a. smell'provicetion from its under side'which works over the cem, and by whose contact with the cem the hammer is lifted end let fall; o is the projection; p shows en upright having a. spring, 7, to receive the baci; end of the herinner and n to give to. Athe blows of the hammer ndditionel force. The form of the spring is seen in the drawing.' The anvil, t, is 'secured to the post, C, by heving'a dove-tailed projection fitting into a, slot and being held by a removable dove-tailed plug; these are seen at c. The operator, standing by the post, C, can give motion to the hammer by pressing the foot upon the treale. Thus one person een Work the machine. The movement of thc trendlc is communicated to the omniashnft by the link, d, from the truck, f, to the truck, iz, by the bend; lifts end lets full the hammer by the cem, k.
We are aware of Letters Patent, numbered No. 9,942, granted to William Ven Anden, August 16th, 1853; but this invention operates differently from ours, and embraces :t diierent arrangement of devices. We do not claim c trip hammer so constructed that by the motion of e cam, u spring is brought to beer more or less upon the hammer-shaft to increase the blow of the hummer; the cem et the seine time raising the hammer. W e nre also ewa-re of VLetters Patent, numbered No. 27,804, issued to David HowelLApril 10th, 1860; but we do not claim a. sliding` curved com, feethoed shaft, sliding clutch, end rod to admit of varying the stroke of the hammer while in motion. Letters Patent, numbered No. 30,080, issued to Alexander Merton, September 1Sth, 1860, are also essentially different from ours. Our invention hes c cli'erent object and intended use from the above specified patents.
What we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The arrangement of the trezidle c, link d, crank-shaft a, balance-whccl b, trnckf, shaft z'flieving the truck .Lend com 7c, hammer m, and anvil t, `in order to constitute, when the trueksfnnd h :tre connected by :t belt, a. machine which con be operated by a. single person, in thc manner herein set forth, and working :is described.
LEONARD ANDREWS, IRA ANDREWS.
