JOHN JOSEPH FEE, OF LIVINGSTON, MONTANA.
COMBINED PACK AND SLED.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 604,523, dated May 24, 1898.
Application filed January 28, 1898. Serial No. 668,242. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN JOSEPH EBB, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at Livingston, in the county of Park and State of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Prospectors Pack and Sled; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertaius to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in a combined pack and sled for the use of prospectors, miners, and others.
An object of the invention is to provide a compact device for transportation of supplies, gold-dust, 650., either on the back as a pack or as a sled to be drawn by hand or by packanimals; and a further object is to produce such a compact device in as convenient and light a form as possible, at the same time to render it water-tight and proof against small insects, so that it may answer as a storehouse for food while in camp.
The invention consists of further and more detailed improvements, which will be hereinafter more clearly pointed out in the specification and claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings for a complete understanding of the device, in which--- Figure 1 is a general perspective view of the device Fig. 2 represents a longitudinal cen tral sectional View of the same. Fig. 3 are details of the covers and packing for the openings in the device. Fig. 4 is a view of the device in operation as a pack, illustrating the means for holding the same on the back. Fig. 5 shows the device in use as a sled drawn by a pack-animal.
In the drawings, A refers to the combined pack and sled, of rectangularform, havin its front lower corner or end a rounded away to form a sled-shaped bottom, which rounded corner also serves to permit the device to be carried'well upon the back ofa person as a pack, the rounded portion giving more free dom and play for the head. (See Fig. 4.)
This device is preferably constructed of metal, the lower or bottom side thereof, which serves as a runner for the sled, being c011- structed of more durable and stronger metal than the superstructure, which maybe constructed of aluminium or lighter material, the object being to make the device as light as possible while strong enough to stand the wear and tear of a sled.
The device is divided preferably into two chambers B and O, as shown in Fig. 2, having openings in the top E, as b and c, which openings are surrounded with rims or collars e to form seats for covers, &c., hereinafter referred to. the outer edge of the top E 011 small uprights a, as shown, and the rear end D of the device has a similar railing cl on uprights (1; also, is provided with two rods 61 in suitable brackets for use in connection with covers for openings 1) and c, hereinafter described. On the front end of the device are provided ears 0 for the attachment of a suitable harness for draft-animals, (to.
F are rubber gaskets or packings which rest tightly upon the top of the device around the openings 7) and c and upon which are placed plates G, preferably of thin metal, having numerous small apertures g therein for ventilating purposes and which keeps out small insects, which are numerous in mining regions, and His a cover which fits over cover G to render the pack water-tight.
I are prospecting-pans, which are inverted, as shown. The rims t fit snugly inside of collars e and pressupon covers H to hold the same tightly in place by means of frameworks J, whose bottoms are of the same size as the bottoms of the pans, and are placed thereon, surmounted by right-angled partitions j, having their upper and outer corners rounded olf, so as to permit bails K, whose ends are secured in ears 6 on the sides of the top of the pack, to slide tightly upon the same to hold the same securely and firmly in place. Small apertures j are provided near the top of these structures J in one of the partitions to permit a padlock to be used to lock the bails to the same when desired. hen the pans are removed and it is desired to lock or secure the covers G or H, or both, temporarily in use, this is accomplished by A railing a is supported around inserting rods d through apertures e in the collars 6 just above the covers.
The harness used for securing the pack ad-- justably and conveniently to the back of a person (see L Z Z, Fig. 4c) is so arranged that it may be quickly adapted in Whole or in part foruse on apack-animal. (See Fig. 5, Mmm.)
Having thus described my invention, What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A combined pack and sled comprising a rectangularshaped box having a runnershaped bottom, two chambers therein, Water and insect proof openings into said chambers, prospecting-pans fitting snugly over and forming secure covers over said openings, bails secured to the sides of the top of said device, locks to secure said bails to superstructures on top of said pans, and adjustable harness for securing the pack on the back of a person or to a draft-animal, substantially as described and set forth.
2. The combination in a pack and sled for miners, of a rectangular-shaped device, havinga toboggan-shaped bottom, compartments in the same having openings through the top of the same, gaskets, perforated and Watertight covers over the same, prospectors pans securely fitting on top of said covers, and means to lock said pans in place, as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
JOHN JOSEPH ERB.
