Description

LQJ. A. MORITZ. LID LIFTER.
Patented May 24, 1898.
(No Model.)
NITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
LOUIS J. A. MOR ITZ, OF STATE CENTRE, IOWA.
LID-LIFTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 604,477, dated May 24, 1898.
' Application filed September 7, 1897. Serial No- 650,883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIS J. A. MORITZ, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of State Centre, in the county of Marshall and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Lid-Lifter, of which the following is a specification. p
The object of this invention is to provide improved means for lifting stove-lids and moving the same from place to place while heated.
My invention consists in the construction, arrangement, and combination of elements hereinafter set forth, pointed out in my claim, and illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in Which-- Figure 1 is a perspective illustrating the mounting of my improved lifter on a stovelid. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of my improved lifter.
In the construction of the device as shown the numeral designates the head portion, to one end of which is integrally fixed a tongue 11. The tongue may vary in shape, form, and size as is desired to conform to the variously-shaped depressions or wells formed in stove-lids to admitand engage the said tongue. A stem 12 is fixed at one end to the central portion of the end face of the head 10 opposite to the tongue 11 and extends straight outwardly therefrom. The outer face of the head 10, adjacent to and surrounding the stem 12, is recessed or formed with an annular groove to receive one end of the sleeve or hub 13, loosely mounted upon the said stem and carrying rigidly secured to the sleeve or formed integrally therewith a concavo-eonvex shield or guard 14, the convex face of said shield or guard approximating to the rear end face of the head 10. A metallic washer 15 is mounted loosely on the stem 12 in contact with the outer end of the sleeve 13, and a leather washer 16 is mounted loosely on the stem 12 outside of and in contact with the metallic washer 15. A series of sections 17, of cork or similar material, connected or not, as desired, with each other, are axially bored and mounted on the stem 12 outside the washer 16, which sections collectively form a grip or handle for the lifter, and are held in collocation and in approximation to the washer 16 by the leather washer 18 on the outside end of the stem 12, the metallic washer 19 on said stem, and a nut 20, screwseated upon the screw-thread outside the end portion of the stem.
The weight of the head and tongue portion of the device is greater than the weight of the grip and stem portions. Therefore when the device is placed in a recumbent position upon a level or plane surface it will rest upon the periphery of the shield or guard 14 at one point and on the face of the tongue 11 atanother point, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 2,
thus providing that the handle portion, stem, and grip never accidentally contact with the heated surface of a stove.
It will be observed by reference to Fig. 1 that when the device is mounted on a stovelid it assumes an angle of about sixty degrees relative to the surface of the stove, and the shield or guard 14 deflects the radiated heat away from the grip portion, and said shield or guard also deflects the radiated heat from the hand of the operator used to grasp the grip portion and manipulate the device.
I claim as my invention- As an improved article of manufacture a lid-lifter comprising a weighted head 10,,a tongue 11 fixed to and extending longitudinally from said head, astem 12 fixed to and extending longitudinally from the end of the head 10 opposite to the tongue 11, the head 10 being formed with an annular recess surrounding the stem, a sleeve 13 mounted for revolution on the stem, one end of which sleeve is inserted within the annular recess in the head, a handle on the stem engaging the outer end of said sleeve and locking the same to the head and a deflecting-plate 14 mounted rigidly on the sleeve and spaced apart from the adjacent end of the head.
' LOUIS J. A. MORITZ. Witnesses:
