Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ELBERT V. D. ROUSSEAU, OF BOUND BROOK, NEW JERSEY.
ENVlELOP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 604,419, dated May 24, 1898.
Application filed July 16, 1897. Serial No. 644,843. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ELBERT V. D. ROUS- SEAU, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bound Brook, in the county of Somerset and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Envelops, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to envelops; and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which may be sealed without the use of mucilage, the sealing devices being mechanical, a further object being to provide an envelop of this class which is particularly adapted for use in sending circulars and similar documents through the mail.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which Figure 1 is a back view of an envelop made according to my invention, the flap of the envelop being open; and Fig. 2, a similar view showing the envelop sealed.
In the drawings forming part of this specification the separate parts of my improvement are designated by the same numerals of reference in each of the views, and in the practice of my invention I provide an envelop of the usual form which is provided with a flap A, end pieces B, which are folded inwardly in the usual manner, and a folding side D. The flap A is provided centrally with a tongue (1, in which is formed a transverse slot a and the folding side D is provided centrally thereof with an extension (1, and formed in said folding side transversely of said extension and longitudinally of the envelop are two slits d and 01 By means of this construction I-provide a central strip 01 In closing or sealing the envelop the flap A is folded over in the usual manner, and the tongue at thereof is passed inwardly through the slit (1 and then outwardly through the slit CF, and the tongue ais then pulled tight, and the projection 01 on the strip 01 is passed through the slot a as clearly shownin Fig. 2.
This device will securely hold the flap in position, and said flap cannot be conveniently opened, and the only way it can be opened at all is to pull downwardly on the tongue a until the projection 01 is released from the slot (1 and then by turning said projection outwardly the tongue a may be pulled out from beneath the strip d My improvement is simple in construction and operation and perfectly adapted to accomplish the result for which it is intended, and it will be apparent that changes in and modifications of the construction herein described may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- As an improved article of manufacture, an envelop provided with the usual folding flap on which is formed a tongue or projection having a transverse slot therein, the back of said envelop being provided with two slots whereby a strip is formed, the lower side of which is provided with a projecting tongue, the tongue on the said flap being adapted to pass through the said slits formed in the back of said envelop and the tongue formed on said strip being adapted to engage the transverse slot formed in the tongue of the flap, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in pres- 9o ence of the subscribing witnesses, this 14th day of July, 1897.
