T0 ALL WHOM IT MAY CONGERN:
Be it' known that I, CLEMENTINE D. RUTHERFORD, of the city of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings, and' State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Corsets and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact descriptionthereof, which will enable others skilled in the art, to make and use the same, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification.
The `olij'ect of the present invention is to so construct and form the corset, that while suiiicient support is imparted hy itto the waistland form of the person by wliom it is worn, yet it will be comfortable and cool 'to thelwearer, it being especiallyy adapted for use during the summer or warm season or portion of the year, and
for this purpose it consists in making the corset of a skeleton 'form or open between the several whalebones .composing'the same, suitable cross-bands being used for properly fastening or securing the whalebones together.
The ligure in the accompanying plate represents my improvement in corsets; and in such 'ligure it is shown as applied to or placed upon the waist of a. person, in' order to more fully and plainly illustrate it.
A, in the drawings, represents the corset, the size of which is to depend upon the person who is to wear it; it being made of suitable shape to conform to and nicely t the waist and form of the person. This corset, A., is made of a series of whalebones, B, covered with or encased in cloth or other proper material, which whalebones are placed at suitable distances apart, and are secured together at each end and at a point about half way between the two ends, by means of cross-bands or tapes,Y C C, made of any suitable material, leaving openings,
'D D, between the several whalebones and tapes, andthereby producing a corset of la skeleton form. The ordinary corset springs arealso secured to the corset at 4the proper points, which springs are to be provided with the common clasps for joining the two ends of the corset together and fastening it about the person. In the upper part of the front of the corset, or that encasing the breast of. the person, aseries of narrow tapes or bands, E E, are secured to the whalebones, which bands cross each other, forming an open net-Work, F, the object of which is to cause the corset frame to more fully support and sustain such portion of the person, Vwhile at the same time it is sufficiently open to be comfortable and cool to the wearer.
From the above, it is plainly obvious that by making the corset of a skeleton or open form, as described, it is rendered exceedingly' comfortable and cool to the wearer, in the Warm or summer season, While at the same time all the support necessary or desirable is secured to .the form or waist, an advantage `of the utmost importance. Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is A corset made of a skeleton oropen form in combination with the net-work FF, the whole being constructed substantially as herein described and for the purpose specified.
The above specification of my invention signed by me this 5th day of May, 1866.
