Description

(No Model.)
w. J, BROOK, PORTABLE FENCE.
Witwwoeo llnrrnn S'rA'rEs PATENT WILLIS J. BROOK, OF TAMAHA, INDIAN TERRITORY.
PORTABLE FENCE.
SPEGIFICATIGN forming part of Letters Patent No. 603,938, dated May 10, 1898. Application filed August 25, 1897. Serial No. 649,494. (No model.)
will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My present invention relates to an improvement in fences, and has for its object the production of a portable fence consisting entirely of metal and designed to be constructed at small expense and in a manner to facilitate its transportation and its erection in a short space of time.
To the accomplishment of these and other objects subordinate thereto my invention consists in forming the fence-panels from a pair of sheet-metal stringers serrated or toothed along their opposite edges and provided upon their opposite ends with post-sockets, the
stringers being connected by vertical stays connected in turn by longitudinally-extending panel-wires secured to the vertical stays by clips cut from the metal of which the stays are formed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 illustrates two panels of my fence arranged as in use. Fig. 2 is a view, on an enlarged scale, of one of the vertical stays, showing the manner of securing the wires thereto. Fig. 3 is a View similar to that of Fig. 2, but taken from the opposite side.
Referring to the numerals on the drawings, 1 indicates the fence-panel, composed of top and bottom stringers 2 and 3, provided with serrated or toothed edges 4: and having terminal post-sockets 5, designed to receive the fence-post 6, of any suitable construction, but preferably formed from metallic bars having pointed lower ends 7 and loops or rings 6 at their upper ends, as illustrated.
8 and 9 indicate vertical stays, likewise preferably formed of sheet metal and located adjacent to the ends of the stringers and being secured thereto, as by rivets or the like, and 10 indicates an intermediate stay similarly constructed and secured to the stringers. Said stays have their lower ends bent at right angles to constitute supporting-flanges, the
flanges of adjacent stays extending upon opposite sides of the fence to prevent its tilting.
ll 11 indicate wire-retaining clips cut from the metal stays and bent back suftieiently to permit the panel-wires 12 to pass between them and-the stays and then bent over the wire and down upon the stays on the side 0pposite the-wire. The clips 11 are arranged in vertical series upon the stays, as illustrated, and the panel-wire is secured at one extremity to the uppermost clip on one of the end stays and is carried longitudinally across the panel through the upper clip on the intermediate stay through the corresponding clip on the stay located on the opposite end of the panel and is then carried down and is returned across the panel, being secured by the next lower line of clips, and thence back in a similar manner until the desired number of strands have been provided.
It will be observed that any number of panels constructed as described may be provided and that they may be caused to assume any proper relative position; also, that the post-sockets upon the stringers of the several panels may be caused to aline in order to permit a-single post to secure the contiguous ends of the two sections, or that various other modilications might be resorted to without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A fence-panel composed of flat metal stringers provided at their ends with postsockets, stays secured to said stringers to hold them in fixed relative position, and panelwires secured to the stays, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a fence-panel, the combination with a pair of stringers, provided with serrated edges and with terminal post-sockets, of vertical stays connecting the stringers, clips. upon the stays, and panel-wires secured to the clips, substantially as described.
3. In a fence-panel, the combination with a pair of stringers having serrated edges and provided with terminal post-sockets, of vertical stays secured to the stringers and having their lower ends bent at right angles, clips cut from the stays and panel-wires secured to said clips, substantially as described.
ICO
4. A fence-panel consisting of flat metal In testimony whereof I have signed this stringers, vertical stays secured thereto to specification in the presence of two subscribhold them in relative position and panel-wires in g Witnesses.
secured to said stays, the stays having their WILLIS J. BROCK. lower ends bent at right angles and the bent Witnesses:
portions of adjacent stays extending laterally J. O. HOPKINS,
in opposite directions. L. S. CARDWELL.
