UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FREEMAN NIOKERSON, OF'BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
HANGER FOR GOODS OR GARMENTS.
A SPECIFICATION formingpartof Letters Patent No. 603,653, dated May 10, 1898.
Application filed May 1, 1897. Serial No. 634,735. (No model.)
Be it known that I, FREEMAN NIoKERsoN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hangers for Goods or Garments, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in a hanger for goods or garments, and it is adapted to be secured to walls, shelves, fixed or portable objects, furniture, 850., for the puror other articles, as will hereinafter be more fully shown and described, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,wherein-- Figure 1 represents a perspective view of the device in use and showing it as pivotally connected to an arm or bracket adapted to be secured to a wall or other object. Fig. 2 represents a detail side view of the main pivoted portion of the hanger, and Fig. 3 represents a similar view of the detachable hanger portion.
Similar letters refer to similar parts whereever they occur on the different parts of the drawings.
The improved hanger consists of a main portion A, having at its upper end a centrallyperforated plate B, which is pivotally connected by means of a screw, pin, or bolt 0 to the object that supports said hanger. Such object may be the ceiling in a room or closet, the under side of a shelf or otherfurniture,&c., as may be most convenient, according to the purpose for which it is to be used. In Fig. 1 I have shown such hanger portion A as being pivotally connected to an arm or bracket D, which may be secured to the wall in a room or closet or to any other upright object or furniture, as may be desired. The hanger portion A is provided with a series of laterallyextending hooks or prongs E E, of any suitable size, form, or shape, from which the goods or garments may readily be suspended.
As the hanger A is pivoted 'on the pin or bolt 0, it will readily be seen that said hanger can be turned around its axis, so as to bring to the front any individual garment or other article that is to be displayed, examined, or removed from any one of the hooks or prongs E E. This is a very desirable feature of the invention for many purposes, among which may be mentioned hanging of clothes in closets or other places or the display of goods in stores or store-windows.
In connection with the main hanger A, I use a detachable auxiliary portion F, which is provided likewise with a series of lateral hooks or prongs G Gfor a purpose like the prongs E on the main portion A.
The auxiliary hanger portion F is introduced through a vertical slot a in the part A and preferably provided at its lower end with a forked recess f, adapted to be interlocked with the lower end of the vertical slot a, as shown in the drawings.
The hanger, portion F has at its upper end a stop projection f, which serves as an abutment against the side of the main portion A I when the parts are assembled, and when so assembled the parts are preferably secured together by means of a pin H, which is put through a perforation in the part F on the opposite side of the main hanger A, as shown. I Wish to state that I do not confine myself to this exact means of securing the part F to the main hanger A, as other or equivalent means may be used without departing from the essence of my invention.
By having the parts A and F detachable from each other they may be packed and transported in a very small package and may readily be assembled when needed for use.
Having thus fully described the nature,
construction, and operation of my invention,
I wish to secure by Letters Patent and claim A hanger for goods or garments consisting in combination, a bracket or support, a pronged member A pivotally connected to said support, and having a vertical slot or, and a pronged detachable auxiliary member F inserted through the slotted portion of the mem-; her A and adapted to be secured thereto when in use, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
,In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, on this 23d day of April, A. D. 1897. 1
FREEMAN NIOKERSON.
