INVENTOR LUUIE PUTTHDFF ATTORNEYS UNITED; STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LOUIS'POTTHOFF, OF FLUSHING, NEW YORK.
ELECTROPLATING APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 603,286, dated May 3, 1898.
Application filed April 22, 1897.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LoUIs POTTHOFF, a resident of Flushing, Queens county, State of New York, have invented certainnew and useful Improvements in Electroplating Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to electroplating apparatus, and has for its object to produce an apparatus which will enable me to coat a wire with metal.
- My invention will be understood by referring to the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof, in which like letters of reference indicate like parts, and in which- Figure 1 is a vertical section through a bath, showing an apparatus embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation, the anodes and inclosing vat or bath being omitted. Fig. 3 is a plan of the working parts, and Fig. 4 is an end elevation of the same.
1 Referring to the drawings, the frame is shown as comprising side bars a, which are joined by bearings b b and cross-bars c. J ournaled in the bearings b are shafts d e, carrying rollers or drums f g, made of insulating material, preferably wood. The shafts d e of the drums f ,g are provided with sprocketwheels h 2', which are joined by a sprocketchain j.' Adriving-wheel k is likewise carried upon the shaft e. Mounted upon the frame A are conducting-combs l m, whose teeth n project in opposite directions. 7 These combs are preferably made of copper., Guiding-rollers p, 1 r, and 8 guide the wire to which is to be electroplated. The frame, with its rollers and combs, is immersed in a bath or vat B, the combs being connected to negative bars b b and constituting the cathode, the anode or anodes b b b dipping into the vat and being connected to positive bars b b.
The mode of operation is as follows; The wire to passes over the guiding-roller 10 and Serial No. 633,219. (No model.)
the guiding-roller q and thence around the drums f g and the frame A, passing between the teeth n of the guiding-comb Z and teethv pose being brought to the bath by means of the bars I) b, which are supplied with electric current, which current passes through the anodes, the solution, the wire w,the combs, and out of the apparatus by the bars 12 12 What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In an electroplating apparatus, thecombination of a bath, a frame contained therein and comprising side bars a, bearings 11 and cross-bars c, a plurality of shafts, rollers f located on the shafts between the side bars of the frame, and one or more guiding-combs of conducting material for guiding the wire, one or' more anodes and circuit connections for the anodes and combs, substantially as de scribed.
2. In an electroplating apparatus for electroplating wire, the combination of a framework carrying rollers, a cond ucting-comb carried by the framework for conducting current from the wires and for maintaining separate turns of the wires apart, a vat surrounding the said framework, comb and rollers, one or more anodes contained in the vat, and circuit connections to the anode or anodes and comb, substantially as described.
