CAR.
SFECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 603,170, dated April 26, 1898.
Application filed April 22, 1897- Serial No. 633,295. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH F. CALDWELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Wilmington, in the county of Lawrence and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cars; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in express, passenger, or mail cars; and the object of the same is to construct the car with a tower, towers, or sentry-boxes, by means of which the mail-car as well as the entire train can be protected by armed men within said towers or sentry-boxes, the same being so situated as to command a view of the entire train.
The invention consists in the novel features of construction hereinafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a car constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same. Fig. 3 is a section through one of the towers. Fig. at illustrates a modified form. Fig. 5 illustrates the tower as applied to a passenger-car. I
Referring to the accompanying drawings, A indicates a car of ordinary construction, the same being formed, preferably, of steel and provided with the towers B and C, projecting from each side of the car at one end thereof and over a portion of the platform. These towers may be of any desired form and Connecting these towers within the car at the top of the same is the arch D, by means of which communication is established between the towers. The lower end of each tower extends beneath the car to form a small compartment E, which is provided with port-holes F, so that the under side of the car ,is protected.
Each tower is divided into an upper and lower compartment by the partition 6, which is provided with the trap-door 6. In the top of each tower is a window 1, which serves as a ventilator and which is protected by a wire guard 1' and is closed by a steel shutter 2,
which is hinged to open inward and is secured by a suitable lock. Around the circumference of the tower are a series of portholes 3, through which a View of the train or car outside and inside can be obtained and which can be used in event of an attack for shooting. Entrance is obtained to the towers from the interior of the car by the doors 10, which are secured by suitable locks.
Within each tower suitable seats 5 are supported by brackets 5 for the use of the guards within the tower. Suitable brackets 9 are also provided for supporting lanterns and arms. Footholds 8 are provided by means of which the guards can ascend to the upper compartments of the towers.
By reason of the towers projecting from the sides of the car and extending above the same the entire train can be protected by guards within the towers.
In the modification illustrated in Figs. 4 and 5 the towers have the passage-way or compartment 11, connecting them and extending transversely with respect to the car. Doors may, if desired, be provided in each side of the passage-way or tower-compartment, whereby access is had to the towers. In this instance the only difference in construction is that the towers are not built separately, but are a part of the compartment which extends transverse the car, and the overhead arch is dispensed with.
In Fig. 5 the idea is illustrated in connection with a passenger-car, and in this arrangement I place a single tower in the center of the floor of the car adjacent one end and pro- 3' ecting through the top of the car. This tower is of the same construction in this instance as in the first construction in regard its interior arrangement and is provided with a door 13, by means of which access may be had thereto. The tower could be positioned in one corner of the car, if desired, although the central location is preferred.
With the car constructed as above described it would be impossible for robbery to be effected, as the entire train and interior of the car is within view of the guards within the towers, and the robbers could not gain admittance to any car in the train or control the engineer or fireman.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure'by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination with a car, of towers built in the same adjacent one end, a chamber extending transverse the car and communicating with the towers, and doors for the chamber or compartment, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a car, of towers built within the same and projecting above the roof thereof, said towers also projecting below the car, port-holes therein, port-holes in the towers, an arch connecting the towers, and communications between the towers and car, substantially as described.
3. A car having towers projecting from the sides thereof and extending above the roof of the same, an arch connecting the towers and establishing communication therebetween at the top of the car, the towers opening to the interior of the car at their lower ends, substantially as set forth.
4. A car having towers projecting from the sides thereof, an arch connecting the towers 2 5 within the car, partitions dividing the towers into upper and lower compartments, doors controlling openings through the partitions, the walls of the towers provided with portholes, the towers communicating with the 30 interior of the car at their lower ends, and doors controlling said communications, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscrib- 3 5
