THOMAS WV. RYAN, OF CONCORD, MASSACHUSETTS.
AUTOMATIC SHUT-OFF BALL-COCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 603,030, dated April 26, 1898. Application filed October 17,1894. Serial No. 526,186. (No model.)
to which said invention appertains to maketo and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section of my improved ball-cock represented as open,
the float-spindle and tank being shown as broken off; and Fig. 2, a transverse section taken on line 2 2 in Fig. 1.
Like letters and numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures of the drawings.
My invention relates especially to an automatic shut-off ball-cock for use in Water-tanks, the object being particularly to provide a device which may be readily repaired and cleaned without removing the screw from the lip of the balhcock, as is customary in ordinary forms, and which can be repacked Without shutting off the water in the main pipe.
The nature and'operation of the improveinent will be readily understood by all conversant with such matters from the following explanation:
In the drawings,A represents the tank, upon which the body B of the cock is mounted in The outer end of the body is exteriorly screw threaded at z, and the supply-pipe H is connected therewith by means of an ordinary screw-coupling 15. The discharge f of the cock opens from the bottom 40 of the body in the usual manner, and adjacent the inner edge of said discharge two valve-seats m r are formed. The interior of the body between the seat r and the supplypipe 11 is ribbed longitudinally at 00, forming A valve n is fitted to slide in said body and be driven against the seat 0' by the water-pressure from the supply. Said valve has a spindle i projecting through the seat m. The face of said valve is equal to or greater than the capacity of the grooves 11, so that the water-pressure on the supply side will act to seat said valve when released, as hereinafter specified, and yet said grooves act to prevent chattering. A large valve D is fitted to slide in the inner end of the body from the dischargepipe and is provided with a packing or leather Washer p, held on its end by a screw q and in position to engage the valve-seat m. The spindle t of the shut-off valve '0 butts against said screw. The valve D is provided with a lip h, projecting through an opening c in the bottom of the body. A casting 71: is pivoted at g and has its upper end forked to astride said lip, whereby the valve D is operated as the casting rocks. The spindle j on the ball E is secured to said casting. The outer end of the body has an annular shoulder 11 and is exteriorly screw-threaded at d, and a screwcap 0 is turned onto said end, covering the end of the sliding valve D.
The bottom of the body B is slotted from the opening '1; through the end of that portion of the body which forms the casing for the valve D. This slot is covered by the screw-cap C and provides a passage for the lip h of the Valve D when said valve is to be removed.
In the use of my improvement as the water rises in the tank, carrying with it the float or ball E, the valve D is driven thereby from left to right, as viewed in Fig. 1, until it engages the seat m, shutting ofi the supply of Water from the main H. As the water lowers in the tank the valve D moves in the opposite direction and the water from the main passes through the grooves y, around the shut-off valve Q), into the discharge. The pressure of the water from the main on the valve o causes it to follow the valve D. When it is necessary to repair the valve D or repack it, the cap 0 is removed, and said valve can be drawn out by hand, the water-pressure in the main driving the valve '0 against its seat, shuttin g the supply 06 automatically.
The amount of pressure on the valve 1; from the main is regulated by the size of the ribs or grooves in the valve-chamber, so that said automatic shut-off valve can be easily driven against said pressure by the large valve, and when said large valve is removed there is still sufficient pressure to close the valve '0 automatically. This shut-off valve is operated by a ground joint preferably, although it may be packed. I show the back part of the valve as bell-shaped at 10,01 chambered, although it may be flat, if preferred. It will furthermore be seen that by the use of my improvement all necessity for using a stop-cock is obviated. It will also be understood that my improved automatic shut-off can be applied to any style of faucets, hydrants, or other Water distribution without interfering with the Waterway or reducing the pressure.
The casting 7c is so arranged that it does not interfere with the removal of the valve ,D when the cap 0 is off.
The ribs :1; form sufficient bearing for the valve 1;, and the spaces are preferably of size to equal the face of the valve.
The air-chamber prevents all chattering or hammering.
My improved valve has a decided advantage over most valves of this class, as the parts are so arrangedithat the float-actuated valve can be withdrawn by simply removing the cap 0 Without detaching the casting by which the float is pivoted, and the valve Q) will at once close automatically when this is done, thus enabling the same to be packed or otherwise repaired Without shutting off the Water from the supply. The action is positive and the construction very simple and cheap. All the parts being horizontal, it is applicable for use in various positions to which the valves constructed in the ordinary manner are not adapted.
Having thus explained myinvention, What I claim is- An automatic float-valve comprisingacasing provided interiorly with two valve-seats, and provided also at one end with exterior screw-threads and with a slot extending in- Ward from the end, a valve on the inlet side,
a valve on the discharge side having a projection entering the slot in the casing, and a screw-cap adapted to be placed on thescrewthreaded end to retain in position the valve on the discharge side, substantially as described.
