HAMMOCK ATTACHMENT.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, ISAAC E. PALMER, of Middletown, in the county of Middlesex and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hammock Attachments, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to an improvement in hammock attachments and it consists in providing means at the opposite edges of the hammock-body for securing an adjustable seat-frame in diderent positions longitudinally along the body of the hammock.

A practical embodiment of my invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a view of the hammock audits attachment in side elevation. Fig. 2 is a top plan view. Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section through the line 3 3 of Fig. 1, and Fig. i is a transverse vertical section showing a modified arrangement of the fastening devices.

The particular form of hammockbody which I have shown herein for illustrating my present invention is formed throughout a portion of. its length in two parts, making an elongated pocket for the reception of the back cross rung of the adjustable frame. This structure, while preferable, is not, however, necessary to the practical application of the fastening device.

The hammock-body is denoted by A, and the upper and lower parts, which form the elongated pocket for the reception of the cross-rung of the seat-frame, are denoted by a a, respectively.

The seat-frame consists of side rails B B, connected by one or more cross-rungs-in the present instance four cross-rungs-and the hammock is supported by a supporting-rope leading from its head end and supportingropes C C, leading from the foot of the seatframe B.

My present invention is directed particularly to the provision of means at the opposite cdges of the hammock-body for fastening the seat-frame to the body in such amanner that it may be released and adjusted toward and away from the head end of the hammock and secured in its position at pleasure. These fastening means at the edges of the hammock are distinguished from means extending across the body of the hammock and are shown in the present instance as tabs or flaps D D, fixed to the hammock-body at its opposite edges and adapted to pass through slots bl), extending longitudinally along the side rails B B of the seat-frame. The slots 1) b are shown as extending horizontally through the skeleton side frame 13 B, and when the fastening-tabs D D are attached to the body of the hammock or to the upper part a of the pocket portion of the hammock they may be passed over the outer sides of the side frames 13 B and then underneath said frames and up to the slots 1) b,then outwardly through said slots and back over the tops of the side rails beneath the base portions of the tabs themselves or of the hammock at the edges of the frame, where the ends will be subjected to a binding effect whenever a downward strain is put upon the hammock-body, as in the case of a person occupying the hammock. This will not only serve to prevent the seat-frame from shifting relatively to the body of the hammock, but it will also hold the hammock-body spread smoothly across the seat-frame and against liability of becoming longitudinally wrinkled.

If the tabs D D be applied to the lower part a of the pocket portion of the hammockbody, they may be extended, first, upwardly along the outer sides of the side rails B B, thence over the tops of the rails and downwardly to the slots b b, thence outwardly through the slots and downwardly between the bottoms of the rails and the base portions of the tabs, where a binding effect will be produced upon them when weight is placed upon the seat-frame tending to depress the back of the frame within the pocket.

The number of fastening-tabs may be one or more at each side of the hammock and may be released with perfect ease whenever strain is removed from the hammock-body.

It is obvious that slight changes might be resorted to in the form and arrangement of the several parts described without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention. Hence I do not wish to limit myself strictly to the structure herein shown; but

What I claim is-- 1. The combination with a hammock-body and means for suspending it, of a seat-frame for interrupting the natural curve of the body of the hammock and fastening devices located in position to secure the opposite edges of the hammock-body to the opposite side of the seatframe to hold the frame in different adjustments longitudinally along the hammockbody, substantially as set forth.

2. The combinationwith the hammock-body provided with tabs or flaps projecting from its opposite edges, of a scat-frame adapted to interrupt the natural contour of the body of the hammock, the said seat-frame being provided at its opposite sides with slots for the reception of the said tabs or flaps for holding the seat-frame in difEerent adjustments lon gitudinally along the body of the hammock, substantially as set forth.
