Be it known that I, DAvID T. DEMAREST, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Alexandi-ia, in the county of Alexandria and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bicycles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a f ull,clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention is an improvement in bicycles; and it consists in the novel features hereinafter described, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which illustrate one form in which I have contemplated embodying my invention, and said invention is fully disclosed in the following description and claims.
Referring to the drawings, Figure l represents a side view of a diamond-frame bicycle constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view of a drop-frame or ladys bicycle. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the blank from which the entire frame 4is bent and shaped. Fig. i is a detail perspective View of the frame after bending and shaping. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the front fork and steeringpost, which are formed in one piece. Fig. G is a vertical sectional View, on a larger scale, of the head or sleeve of the machine, the steering-post, and handle-bar support. Fig. 7 is a detail sectional view of the saddle-post and its connections. Fig. 8 is a detail perspective view, on an enlarged scale, of a brace for stiifening the frame and supporting the crank-hanger. Fig. 9 is a detail view of the support for the rear axle. Figs. 10 and ll are detail views of parts of the mechanism hereinafter described.
The frame of my improved machine is coinposed of a single piece of wood, which in the rough is constructed in the general outline indicated in Fig. 3. The end pieces a a of the blank A increase gradually in size from the ends to points a'. Between these points the blank is divided into three longitudinal portions, the outer portions a2 a2 being continuous and the central portion a3 being cut away at the point a, leaving an open space d5 from the point 'd4 to the point a', in rear of the saine. The frame is then bent after` being steamed or otherwise treated to prevent breaking and is caused to assume the general Serial No. 633,455. (No model.)
form shown in Fig. it, the end portions of the blank forming the main bars d a of the frame, the short central arm a3 forming the verticallydisposed connecting-bar and saddlesupport, and the portions a2 a2 forming the rear fork of the frame, between the parts of which the rear wheel revolves.
The forward ends of the bars a a may be connected directly to the steering-head; but in order to give greater rigidity to the frame I prefer to connect the said bars to a sleeve B, formed, preferably, of steel, through which the steering-post passes. These bars are connected to the said sleeve preferably by bands of steel or other suitable metal c c, which are passed around said sleeve and preferably lie in annular recesses therein, so as to be hush with the surface of the sleeve, and said bands c are secured to the bars a by means of rivets or bolts or screws, as found most desirable.
The vertically-disposed connecting-bar as is provided at its upper end with a slightlyreduced portion e6, above which is astill further reduced portion al. Upon the reduced portion d@ I place a tubular socket D, preferabl y of steel, which is riveted or otherwise secured to the bar c3 and extends to the end of the said bar, leaving an annular space between the reduced portion dT and the inside of the tubular guide B. The said guide, it will be seen, will lie lush with the exterior surface of the bar d3 and will be provided about midway of its length with a collar CZ, provided with horizontal dan ges d cl2 cl2, the said collar being brazed or otherwise secured to the sleeve D and the said flanges being secured by screws or rivets to the under side of the bar .a and forked bars a2 d2. (See Figs. l and 7.) I also prefer to provide a brace-plate E (shown in detail in Fig. 10) for the upper side of the joint made at this point. The plate E is provided with forked portions e e,adapted to engage the upper side of the forked bars a2 d2, and said plate is also provided with an aperture e', which its snugly the sleeve or socket D, as shown in Fig. 7. The plate E is placed in position and secured by screws or rivets, as desired.

Abicycle comprising among its members, the main frame-bars, the side portions continuous therewith connecting the rear ends of said main bars, separated and bent to form the rear fork, the central bar extending from the juncture of the lower main frame-bar with said side portions, upwardly, and secured to the juncture of the upper main frame-bar with said side portions, said main bars, side portions and central bar being formed of one piece, said central bar having a sleeve on its upper end, and a reduced portion within said sleeve, the hollow saddle-post engaging said reduced portion,within said sleeve and means for clamping said hollow saddle-post to said reduced portion of the barbetween said sleeve and said bar, substantially as described.
