Be it known that I, CHARLES F. NELSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Galesburg, in the county of Knox and State of lllinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Mailing-Signal and Door-Bell, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a combined mailing-signal' and door-bell.
The object of the invention is to provide means for raising a lid which covers a mailreceiving orifice in a door and which means are connected with a door-bell in such manner that the door-bell is rung by the act of raising or tilting said lid.
The invention consists in constructions and combinations utilized in carrying out the aforesaid objects and which are hereinafter fully described and are made the subject-- matter of claims hereto appended.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a construction embodying my invention seen from the inner side of the door, a fragment of which is shown. The door-bell is shown partly broken away in this figure. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation in the line 2 2 in Fig, 1; Fig. 3, a side elevation of parts of the device, showing the bell-gong and cap-plate below it removed; Fig. Il, a vertical sectional elevation of the bell-gong, a side elevation of the operative parts of the bell, and a sectional elevation of other parts in line 4 4 in Fig. 3; Fig. 5,an enlarged elevation of parts seen from the outer side of the door.
The reference characters herein used indicate, respectively, the same parts in the different figures of the dra-wings.
A fragment of a door 5 to which my invention is applied is shown in the drawings. A plate G, preferably of metal, is fixed to the inner side of the door and has an elongated oriiicc 7 therethrough, which is coincident with a corresponding orifice S in the door, and a plate Si, fixed to the outer side of the door, has
a corresponding orifice 10. These orifices are preferably sloped inwardly and upwardly, as Seen at Fig. 2, for shedding water outwardly.
The plate (i has a iiange 11 surrounding its orifice, and the plate 9 has a similar flange 12, in which the flange 11 seats or telescopes in such manner as to not only form a lining for the mail-receiving orifice 13, formed by the two anges, but which also permits of adjusting the plates 6 and 9 at different distances apart in an evident manner to suit doors of different thickness.
A lid 11i, which covers the mailing-oritice 13, has a cylinder-shaped projection 15 along its upper edge. Pintles 16 17 are fixed in the hollow ends of the projection 15 by means of set-screws 18 and extend through standards 19, which project from the plate 6, to forni journals, by which the lid 14 is hinged to the plate 6 to permit of swinging it outwardly, as shown by dotted lines at Fig. A standard 20 projects from the plate 6 and has a central i opening 21, which extends to near its outer end and has a slot along its lower side. A similar standard projects from the outer side of the door and has a central opening 24: in line with the opening 21 and which extends to near its outer end and is there reduced in size to form a shoulder A rackbar 2G is slidably seated in the openings 21 and 24 and an opening 27 in the door 5. The rack-bar 26 is held in its normal position or forced inwardly by a spring 28, which is coiled thereon, and one end of which rests against. the shoulder 25, while its other end rests against a pin 29, which is adjustably seated in either of the series of holes 30 through the rack-bar 26 ,whereby the tension of the sprin g may be adjusted as required when the device is mounted on doors of differentthickness. A knob 31 is mounted on the outer end of the rack-bar 26 and together therewith' forms the bell-pull 32. The knob 31 is adjustable on the rack-bar 26 to adapt it for use with doors of different thickness and is fixed against movement lengthwise of the rack-bar, but permitted to revolve thereon after such adjnstments by means of a set-screw 33, which passes through the shank of said knob and into one of the circumferential grooves 3i in the rack-bar 2G. A collar 35, fixed to the VIO shank oi' the knob, extends loosely over the outer end of the standard 23. A series of teeth 36 extend from the lower side of the rack-bar 26 on its end within the standard 20, and these teeth engage with a curved rack-bar 37, which is fixed to the upper part of the lid 14 in such manner that when the bell-pull 32 is drawn outwardly, as shown by dot-lines at Fig. 2, the rack-bar acting on the curved rack 37 will tilt and raise the lid 14 to uncover the mailing-orifice 13, so that mail may be delivered therethrough to any suitable receiver or to fall on the floor. Vhen the bell-pull is released, the spring 28 Wiil retract it and thereby tilt the lid 14 to its fullline position and close the mailing-orice 13 in an evident manner.
The bell shown is an ordinary alarm-bell mounted son the plate 6 adjacent to the tilting lid 14 and in such position that a detent 38, projecting from the extended end of the pintle 16, will in its normal position bein the path of and in vcontact with an arm'39, which is fixed to and projects from the axis 40 of the escapement-anchor 41, which 'carries the pallets 42 and which arm is oscillat'ed laterally when said anchor is free to osoillate. The arm 43, which carries the hammer 44, is also fixed to the axis 40. The spring 45, coiled von the shaft or axis 46 of the drive-wheel 47, rotates it as soon as said wheel is free to move. The wheel 47 `gears with a lantern-wheel 48, which is .fixed 4on Ithe axis of the escapement-wheel 49. The usual ratchetwheel 50 is mounted on the axis of the wheel 47, and a spring-pawl 51, mounted on the wheel 47 coacts therewith in the ordinary manner. The gong '52 is mounted on the upper end of the shaft 46 and is removably connected therewith by a pin The spring 45 is wound tightly and closely on the shaft 46 by rotation of the gong `52 and is prevented from action on the train of ygearing between it and the hammer by the engagement of the detent 38 withthe arm 39. When 'the bell-pull is drawn back,as hereinbefore described, and the lid 14 tilted upwardly t-o uncover the orice 13, the detent 38 will thereby be swung upwardly to release the arm 39 and permit the train of gearing: to move and continue actuating the hammer until the bell-pull is released, when the spring 28, 'acting as hereinbefore described, will lower the 'detent 38 to its normal position,
where it will remain and hold the bell-hammer 'at rest until the bell-pull is'again 'drawn sire to be confined to the same, as such changes and modifications may be made as fall within the scope of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a combined mailing-signal and doorbell, and in combination, plates 6 and 9, having telescoping flanges 11 and 12 respectively, a tilting lid 14 hinged to the plate 6, a curved rack-bar mounted` on said tilting lid, and a belhpull with a rack-bar xed thereon, whose teeth mesh with teeth of said curved rack-bar, substantially as described.
2. In a combined mailing-signal and doorbell, and in combination, plates 6 and 9, having telescoping iianges,l1 and l2 respectively, a tilting lid 14 hinged to the plate 6, a curved rack-bar mounted on said tilting lid, a hollow standard 23 with `a stop or shoulder 25, a slot- -ted hollow standard 20, `and a bell-pull comprising a rack-bar 26 whose teeth mesh with the teeth of said curved rack and an adjustable knob 31, a spring 28, and adjustable pin 29, substantially as described.
3. In a combined mailing-signal and doorbell,r and in combination, a hollow standard 23 with astop lor shoulder 25, a slotted standard 20, and a bell-pull comprisin ga rack-bar 26, an adjustable knob 31, a spring 28, adjustable pin 29, a set-screw 33, and circum- .ierential grooves 34, substantially as described.
4. In a combined mailing-signal and vdoorbell, and in combination, a hollow standard 23 with a stop or shoulder 25, a slotted standard 20, and a bell-pull comprising a rack-.bar 26, an adjustable knob 31, a 'spring 28, adjustable pin 29, `a set-screw 33, and circumferential grooves 34, land a collar 35, substantially as described.
5. In a `combined mailing-signal and doorbell, and in combination, abell-pull, a tilting lid for a mail-receiving orifice, a rack on .said bell-pull, a curved rack yon the .lid the teeth of which .mesh with the teeth of the bell-pull rack, an alarm-bell comprising an varm connected with the axis of the escapement-anchor, and a detent connected with to be operated by said tilting lid and bell-pull, substantially as described.
6. In Ia combined mailing-signal and doorbell, and in combination, a bell-pull, a tilting lid or cover for a mail-receivingoriiice, a rack on said bell-pull, :a curved rack on said lid the teeth of which mesh with the teeth of the bell-pull rack, lan alarm-bell, a detent connected with to be operated by said tilting lid, and means cooperatively connectingsaid detent and the train of mechanism of said alarm,
