WILLIAM T. MGMILLEN, 0 F' GINCINLATI, O HIO Letters Patent No. 60,220, dated .December 4:, 1.866,.
.SPECIFICATION.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, WILLXAM T. MCMILLEN, of Cincinnati, Hamilton county, State of Ohio, have uinvented certain new and useful improvements in Fire-Places; and I do hereby declare the followingto be a full, clear, and enact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings making .part of this Specification. i
My invention consists in the application and adaptation of detlectorspin connection irith air-heating` chambers and caliducts to {ire-places having common iron mantels, the chamber encompassing the fire space, and having good heat-reflecting properties. In the accompanying drawings- Figure 1 is a perspective yiew of the back ot' a tire-place and mantel embodying my invention.
Figure 2 is a vertical section of the same.
Figure 3 is a rear view of the lire-place, with part of the back removed.
A is a marblcized or other` metallic mantel; B, a cylindrico-spherical doub1e-walled nre-place, also of metal, its surface b concave, so as to reilect heat into the room, and its interlaminal space C' forming an air-heating jacket, from which branch any number of calicluets, E; those marked E serving to convey hot air to the upper stories. F F are air inlets to the jacket. G is a cleaning hole, and H'the smoke' flue. Iis the firef grate, and J detachable corrugatedback, removable when burnt out. K K represent deectors arrahgedwithin the airheating chamber, to compel the air, in passing from the pipes F F' to the caliducts D and E, to go in contact with the hottest portion of the back of the tire-place, whereby the air is more e'ectually heated and the tire-back maintained at a more uniform temperature.
The apparatus is chiefly designed for attachment to metallic mantels, so prevalent in some parts of the country, where, from local causes,.iron is cheapest, but may. berused with marble, slate, wood, or other material.
I claim herein as new, and of my invention- The combination of the deflectors K K, with the chamber C, pipes F F', caliducts D.E,and ue H, all constructed and arranged as andfor the purposes set forth. 1
In testimony of which invention I hereunto set my hand. p
