Fly 1 R. H. WHITTED. GBOCERS CABINET.
Patented Apr. 5, 1898.
INVEN TOR 1 NITED STATES.
ROBERT H. WI-IITTED, OF CRAWFORDSVILLE, INDIANA.
GROCERS CABINE-T.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 601,921, dated April 5, 1898.
Application {iled December Z3, 1896. Serial No. 616,720. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT H. WHITTED, a citizen of the United States, residing at Crawfordsville, in the county of Montgomery and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Grrocersv Cabinets, of which the following is a specification, reference being made to the accompanying drawlngs.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my cabinet when closed. Fig. 2 is a plan of the same with the top removed. Fig. 3 is a detail drawing of a portionY of my device on a larger scale than is shown inthe other drawings. Figs. 4 and 5 are vertical cross-sections of my cabinet, the cutting planes being at right angles to each other and parallel to the sides of the cabinet.
I am aware that my grocers cabinet, as shown in Fig. 1, does not differ materially in its exterior appearance and construction from cabinets used for variousv purposes, being made of wood in panels and having a door a, of which the upper panel is glass; but my invention consists of the peculiar, convenient, and novel arrangement of the interior. The interior has a quadrant shelf b, rigidly fixed V'tothe inner face of the door a near its bot-- tom and adapted to swing open and shut with the door. This shelf is adapted toreceive an open-topped jar, keg, or other vessel c, containing for sale goods requiring to be inclosed and covered for protection.
The shelf o is supported near the ends of its curved side by rollers d and e to relieve the strain on the hinges of the door a and to facilitate rapidity and ease of swinging the shelf b and vessel o out and in when serving a customer.
The roller e, next to the door d, bears upward against'the under surface of the shelf b, while the roller d bears downward against the upper surface of the floor f of the cabinet. The cover g of the vessel c is so devised that it does not swing out of its'position in 45 ally through the cover g. The axis-line of 5o the pivots is parallel to two edges of the cover g and is so placed that the rear part of the cover is the heavier, which causes the cover to assume the inclined position shown by the dotted lines in Figs. 3 and 5 when the vessel c is swung from under it. The cover g is stopped at the desired incline and Ylimited in motion to the angle formed by the crossing of the dotted lines l m and n o by the stops i i, fixed rigidly into cleats h h, fastened to the upper surface o'f the cover g and revolving about the pivots lo k as a center. These stops are limited in movement by the inner edges of the U -shaped cleats p p. When the vessel c is swung back into position again,
the upper rear edge thereof strikes against the under face of the lower part of the cover -g and forces it to assume a horizontal position, in which position it covers the vessel o.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
In a grocers cabinet, the combination consisting of the door d having a quadrant shelf b rigidly lixed to the inner side thereof; rollers d and e supporting and facilitating the swinging of the shelf b out and in; the tilting cover g, standing normally in an inclined position and adapted to automatically assume a horizontal position as cover of a vessel c swung underneath thereof when standing upon the swinging shelf b; and the parts Ic, Z, 19 and h; all used in combination and substantially as, and for the purposes set forth. ROBERT H. WHITTED. Witnesses:
