UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANDREWV JACKSON SMETTERS, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
MUSIC OR BOOK HOLDER AND RACK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 601 ,736, dated April 5, 1898.
Application filed June 23, 1897. Serial No. 642,210. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that LANDREW JACKSON SMET- TERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Music or Book Holder and Rack, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in music or book holders and racks in which are arms and clasps for grasping and turning the leaves of the book or sheet-music.
The objects of my improvement are to provide a holder or support for book or music whereby the operator can at-will turn or return the sheet without interfering with or otherwise inconveniencing the operator. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front view of the entire holder. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the holder. Fig. 3 is a View looking at my improvement from an end view with the end of the base or box A removed and showing parts thereof.
Throughout the respective views similar letters refer to similar parts.
The box (or base) A is inclosed except in front. To this box (or base) A are secured the uprights B O D, and which uprights (or posts) B O D are so secured as to stand on top of the box (or base) A and are braced by the bars 6 e at top. From the collar 9 project the cross-beams h b. The collars h 7L2 are provided with thumb-screws c' 2' for the purpose of firmly securing said collars in position to the uprights B and D, respectively. Said collars h 77,53 are provided with holes J J 2 for the purpose of passing the regulating-cords 7c 7t 7.; through.
The collar L on the upright O is provided with the arms L and L and on the en ds thereof are secured the clasps L and L The collar M is provided with the long arm M and the clasp M secured on the end thereof. On said collar, opposite to said long arm M, is a short arm M in which is a hole or holes at the end thereof, and through which hole or holes the cord 70 is passed after first being passed through the hole J. Said cord is secured to the short arm M and the loose end thereof carried to and through the hole J 2 and down through a hole provided therefor in the top of the box (or base) A. The end of said cord is then properlytensioned and firmly secured to thekey O. The other end of said cord 70 is properly tensioned and firmly secured to the key O.
The collar M is provided with the long arm M and secured to the end of said long arm is the clasp M Also secured to said collar M is the short arm M in which is a hole (or holes) at the end thereof, and through which hole or holes the cord is is passed after first being passed through the hole J. Said cord is secured at the one end to the arm M and the loose end thereof carried to and through the hole provided in the top of the box (or base) A. Said cord is properly tensioned and firmly secured to the key 0 The other or first end of this said cord 7; is, as the other end at O firmly secured to the key 0 After these cords 7t 7t 7t 7c are so passed through the respective holes provided in the top of the box (or base) A, and thence through the hole J of the collar h, and thence through the holes provided in the ends of the short arms m and M and thereto, respectively, firmly secured, and thence carried over and through the hole J 2 in the collar 72 and down through the holes in the top of the box or base A and each respectively secured to the keys (or levers) 0, O O and 0 Thus by striking the key (or lever) O the arm 1 is thrown over to the opposite side and the key (or lever) O, to which the other end of the cord 7t 7a is secured, is forced to an elevated position ready to strike and reverse the arm M, and likewise the same with the other arm M and the keys or levers O and 0 The rail R is provided and so arranged as to hold the book or sheet-music to keep it from slipping off the box. To the back of the box A, are secured the keys (or levers) O, O O and O and in such manner as, when the cords 70 7c 7.: 7c are secured to the keys O, 0 O and O, to turn or reverse the arms M and M There may be one or more arms, as M and M operated by keys, as 0, O O and O and cords 7t 7t 7.: 7.2, or the respective parts may be increased or decreased correspondingly. The operator secures the back sheets (or cover) of the book, at the top thereof, by the clasps L and L and likewise secures the leaves to be turned to the clasps M and M so that when desired by the opera- IOC ' tor the respective leaves may be turned or reversed at will by striking" the key 0 or O or O or 0 WVhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
