Description
.UNITED VSTATES ALEXANDER fr. DE PUY, or NEviT YORK, N. Y., AssIGNoRro R. QHQE saco.,
PA OFFICE` l OF SAME PLACE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 60,151, dated December 4, `1866.
To all 'whom it may concern: i
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER T. DE PUY, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Printers Galley, and I do hereby declare that` the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof', which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in
edges of said metallic strip `or lining, so that they may be slid into grooves cut into the woodenledges, and thus be kept secured to them without using any other fastening devices.`
Heretofore the metallic strips were attached to the wooden ledges or frame by means of screws. The main disadvantages ofthismanner of securing them were: the ironscrews soon lost their firm hold in the wooden ledge by rusting, and the metallic strip thus became shaky in a short space of time; the heads of the screws could never be so accurately iitted as to offer a smooth surface with the metallic strip, they .either projecting from or sinking' a little into the latter, which is a very great disadvantage, as the metallic strips y are merely for the purpose ofgiving a more@ smooth inner surface .tolthe `galley thanthe i Wooden ledge alone wonlddo. `All these dis; J advantages are completelylovercome byymy.
invention.` 1
Thetop and bottom` cdge'fof the metallic 1 strip or lining `A are bentwtwice inrightl angles, so that the last bend is parallel tojtheljf 1i main body of the plate, `als seenfin- Fig. 2. y l Grooves are then cutinto thebottom and top f j@ of the wooden ledges B, so that thelast bend of the strip may tthesaid grooves#` The strip A having thus `been bent, `andvjfthe y grooves having beencut into `theledge 1B,ltl1e 1 y 1. former is then slid `into andgalongside thelaty ter, when the whole` ledgethus formed iis ready to be attached to the bottom plate (lof l.
the galley.` In this way; I am enabledlto construct the ledges in long :.pieces, and cutting j` them to the requisite l.lengths,1wl1en` finished,
thus obtaining a very cheap and durable ledge for printers galleys."`
The whole length of the metallic strips hold ing onto the wooden `ledge at,` its top and bottom gives a very secure hold,.decidedly more y than two Vor three screws would.
The modes `of attaching the `ledges -to thel lf bottom C may be various; no particular one claimed by me. 1
Having thus described myinvention, what f l I claim as new, and desire to secureby Letters Patent, is-
The combination ofthe metalliclining with the frame Vof a printers galley, in the manner substantially as herein `shown 'and described.; ALEXANDER DE IUY; n Witnesses: U `v j.. 1
