Description

@uitrit tstes getest @fitta IMPROVEMENT IN INSTRUMENTS I'OBI DESTROYING EMBRYO` GATERPIILAES.
AARON CASIlBlllillt, OF SIPESVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA.
Letters Patent No. 60,135, dated December 4, 1,866. i
SPECIFICATION- TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known -that I, AARON CASEBEER, of Sipesville, in the county of Somerset, and State of Pennsylvania, haveinvented an Instrument for Destroying the Embryo of Caterpillars; and I do hereby declarethat the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the aecompanyingidrawings, making a part of this specification, in Whichl Figui-ellis Iaperspective view, showing the manner of using the instrument.
Figure@ showsV the manner of securing the cutting blades to a staff.
, Figure 3 is a front view of the cuttingblades applied to the upper end of their sta.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.v
This invention relates to an improved instrument which is designed for destroyngtlie eggs of the caterpillar by removing those portions of the branches 'and twigs of trees to which the eggs are attached. The inventionl consists in so constructing a knife and applying it to a staif that small branches offtrees can be readily cut olf by a thrust or' drawing movement of the staff, whether the person be above or below such branches, said knife being so applied to its stati' that the twig or branch will be held firmly at the point where it is desired to sever it, as will be hereinafter described. Y fr l l y L To enable others skilled in the art to understand my invention, I will describe its construction `and operation;
The staff of the instrument is'constructed of any desired length, and may be `madecf detachable sections, so that it maybe shortened or made longer, as circumstances require. Near theupper end :of `this sta`,`A, and on one side of it, the knife, B, is applied by means of bolts, a a, passing through the staf and receiving nutsfon their ends, as shown in iig. 2. The knife consists of two blades, C C, formed on thecentral shank, 1r." These -blades are both alike in form, and are bevelled, so that their cutting edges are nearest the staif.` The cutting edges of the knives form acute angles with the surface of the staff, so .that the branches whichvare to be cut off are received in the V-shaped spaces, and consequently cannot slip away from thecuttingedges during the act of severing. Two blades, C C, are used for the purpose of enabling a person to cut branches from their limbs which are above and below him, as in some cases it will be necessary to ascend the trees for the purpose of reaching those limbs or branches which have the eggs attached to them'. When the upper blade is usedthe branch is cutoff by a thrust of the instrument; and when it is necessary to use the lower knife the instrument` isdrawn quickly toward the person using it.
Having thus described my invention, what claim as new, and desire to secure ,by` Letters Patent, is A knife which is composed of two blades, C C, united to a contracted shank, b, .to be used substantiallyas described.
AARON CASEBEER.
