Description

W. A. L. KIRK.-
s01) CUTTER.
No. 45,926. Patented Jan.- 17, 1865.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WM. A. L. KIRK, OF HAMILTON, OHIO.
IMPROVED SOD-CUTTER.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 46,926, dated January 17, 1865.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. L. KIRK, of Hamilton, Butler county, Ohio, have-invented a new and uset'ullmplemcnt for Cut ting and Spading Sods; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanyng drawings, making a part of this specification.
brought to an oblique point at its center, and
the vertical portions 6 e of said blade have their cutting-edges inclined-backward.
The efiect of the above-described shape and position of the cutting-edges of the saidblade is to give it a carving action on the roots and other obstructions and to enable a complete disconnection of the slice with a minimumexpeuditure of power. In addition to the above functions, the difl'erent parts 6 c e of said blade act in conjunction with the rollers B and (l to hold the implement to its proper course and depth, the vertical portions 2 e acting also in co-operation with the cutters I) D to detach the edges of the slice.
The blade E may be attached to the frame by means of screw-bolts F, and may be capacitat'ed for vertical adjustment by the provision of slots G in the vertical portions 0 e.
H and I are scrapers for the removalof dirt and trash from the rollers.
K is aclcvis'for attachment of the team.
L is a handle.
I have selected to illustrate my invention a form whichpractical test induces me to prefer; but I do not desireto confine myself to the precise arrangement herein described so long as I effect the purpose by means substantially equivalent. For example, the vertical parts ce of the blade E, being maintained at a cuttingedgc, may be made to. do all of the incising necessary, so as to dispense withthe circalar cutters.
I claim herein as new and of my invention- 1. The arrangement of frame A, rollers B and. (l, and sod-cutting blade E e e e", substantially as set forth.
2. The parts A, B, O, D, D, E, e, e, e, F, G, K, and L, as herein arranged and combiued.
In testimony of which invention I hereunto set my hand.
WM. A. L. KIRK. Witnesses:
GEO. H. KNIGHT, JAMES H. LAYMAN.
