UNITED STATES` PATENT EEicE.
sAMUEL H. ARRELL, OE GUTHRIE, OKLAHOMA TERRITORY.
TOBACCO-CUTTER.
SPECIFIGATION forming` part of Letters Patent No. 601,332, dated March 29, 1898.
Application filed March 9, 1897. Serial No` 626,591. (No model.)l
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL H. ARRELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Guthrie, in the county of Logan and Territory of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tobacco-Cutters, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to what are known as tobacco-cutters, and particularly to that class thereof employed for cutting plug-tobacco; and the Object of the invention is to provide a tobacco-cutter of this class of the usual form which is provided with means for automatically cleaning the c utter-blade as the latter is operated.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accom pan ying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by the same numerals of reference in each of the views, and in whichf Figure 1 is a side view of my improved tobacco;cutter, part of the frame of the device being broken away; and Fig. 2, a vertical section on the line 2 2.
In the practice of my invention I provide a tobacco-cutter which comprises a base-plate 5, to one end of which is secured ayoke-shaped frame 6, in the upper portion of which is formed a central slot or opening 7, centrally of which is pivoted a lever 8, and adjacent to the rear side of the slot or opening 7 is pi voted a plate or link 9 of the form shown in Fig. l, and pivotally connected with the link 9 and with the lever 8 is a curved orseginental coupling-link 10, and the cutting-blade 12 is securedto a cross-head 13, which is provided with a short armll and a longer arm 15, and the short arm 14 is pivotally connected with the plate 9 and the longer arm 15 with the lever 8 below the connection of the link 10 therewith. The opposite sides of the yoke 6 are provided with vertical grooves 16,in which the cutting-blade 12 moves, and mounted at each side of the upright portions in the grooves 17, formed in the yoke 6, is a downwardly and inwardly inclined blade 18.
The blades 18 are held in proper position by screws or bolts 19, which pass through slots 20, formed in said blades, and into the. sides ofthe yoke 6, and said blades 18 are vertically adjustable within certain limits, and are also sharpened at their lower edges and adapted to press upon the opposite sides of the cutting-blade 12, and in the operation of the cutting-blade 12, by means of the lever 8, said blade is caused to rise and fall in the usual manner, the plug or plugs of tobacco being passed beneath said cutting-blade over the plate 5, and as the cutting-blade 12 is raised the blades 18W-ill remove from the sides thereof all particles of tobacco that adhere thereto.
It is a well-known fact' that the cuttingblades of tobacco-cutters of this class become quickly clogged or covered with tobacco, which is very hard to remove; but by means of my improvement the cutting-blade is kept clean, as will be readily understood, the tobacco adhering thereto being removed at each upward movement of said blade.
This device is simple in construction and operation and is perfectly adapted to accomplish the result for which it is intended, and
it will be apparent that changes in and modications of the construction herein described maybe made without departing from'the spirit of`my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The herein described tobacco cutter comprising a base 5, frame 6 having a slot 7, a lever 8, links 9 and 10, a cutting-blade 12, cross-head 13 provided with arms 14 and 15 the sides of said frame being provided with grooves 16, and scraping-blades 18 held in place by screws 19, all combined substantially as shown and described and for the purpose g ICO the sides of said frame being provided With In testimony that I claim the foregoing as grooves 16, in which said cutting blade is my invention I have signed my nanie, in pr'es- 1o mounted and grooves 17 in which said scrapence of the subseribin g Witnesses, this 2d day ing-blades are mounted, said scraping-blades of March, 1897.
being provided with slots 20, and set-screws SAMUEL. H. ARREIJL. passed through said slots whereby the said Witnesses: scraping-blades may be adjusted, substan-` HENRY D. TODD,
tially as shown and described. MARCUS L. CARLISLE.
