have invented certain'new and useful Improvements in Trunks or Hat-Boxes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention relates to improvements in trunks and hat-boxes, and among the principal objects of the same are the following: the provision of a simple, inexpensive, and effective device, in combination with a trunk or hat-box, for permitting a hat to be readily secured in such a position as to prevent its being jostled about and injured during transportation, the said device being particularly useful in supporting and carrying ladies hats, for which use the same is chieiiy intended; further, providing a means whereby the said hat support and retainer may be readily detached, so as to permit the free use of the trunk or hat-box for other purposes.

My invention is illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in Which- Figure 1 is a plan view ofi a trunk-tray containing my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of Fig. l on the line a: Fig. 3 is a Vertical section on the line y y, Fig. l, illustrating details of construction.

A is a trunk-tray divided by suitable partitions. In one corner of said trunk-tray is a space chiefly intended to carry one or more hats. Practice has demonstrated that it is undesirable to loosely pack hats in trays or boxes for transportation, as the same are frequently jostled about to such an extent that the hat is injured. To obviate this danger, I provide a frame of substantially semiovoid shape secured at a suitable place in the tray A, over which frame the hat maybe placed. B designates the said frame, the'same being preferably formed of woven stiif material, such as light wire. The mesh of the said frame B is sufficiently open to allow free ventilation and to also allow a pin-D to be passed Patent No. 601,073, dated March 22, 1898.l

To permit the frame B to be removed so that the trunk-tray or hat-box may be used for other purposes, I provide clips E E, secured at suitable points in the said tray or box, so that lugs F F, carried by thebody B on substantially opposite sides,maybe slipped into place under said clips or retracted therefrom when it is desired to detach said frame. To prevent the accidental detachment of the said frame, I provide around its lower edge a suitable spring reinforce Gry of slightly greater diameter than the space between said clips E E, so that by attaching the lugs F F to the spring-reinforce at suitable points to register with said clips the expansive tendency of the said reinforce tends to hold the parts securely in position.

While the accompanying illustration shows my invention as applied to the tray of a trunk and also shows only one frame secured thereto, it is manifest that the same is equally applicable to a box solely used for carrying hats, and one or more frames may be attached thereto at suitable points in the bottom, sides, or top thereof.

It is not my intention to limit myself as to ythe material used or shape of the hat-retaining frame so long as the same will accomplish the ends herein mentioned.

Other means than the clips E may be used to secure the frame B in place in the trunk or hat-box.

What I claim is- 1. In a trunk-tray or hat-box, a frame for securing hats, said frame having a central Woven body of substantially sem i-ovoid shape, the mesh of same being sufliciently open to permit free ventilation and to also permit the passage of a retaining-pin, and a reinforce around the lower edge of said body, and retaining-lugs. y

2. In a trunk-tray or hat-box, a frame for ,securing hats, said frame having a central woven body of substantially semi-ovoid shape, the mesh of the same being sufficiently open to permit free ventilation and to also permit the passage of a retaining-pin, and a reinforce around the lower edge of said body and retaining-lu gs carriedl thereby.
