No. 797,687. PATENTED AUG. 22, 1905. W. B. G. HERSHEY. BOTTOM FOR VEHICLE SEAT SUPPORTS.
APPLICATION IILE'D AUG. 4. 1904.
WITNESSES? I INVENTOR C'lS'oughton. 11/17/107 BC/i'czsiay ATTO R N EYv Annnzw a, mum 120.. Pnmo-umOGflAPuEns. msumuron. n. c.
' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM B. C. HERSHEY, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE EX- CELSIOR SEAT COMPANY, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO.
BOTTOM FOR VEHICLE-SEAT SUPPORTS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 22, 1905.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM B. C. HERSHEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at C0- lumbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Bottoms for Vehicle-Seat Supports, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a new and useful improvement in bottoms for vehicle-seat supports.
The object of the invention resides in the superior construction of a bottom and its supporting means whereby the said bottom may be readily removed to facilitate the painting and cleaning of the said seat-support.
Finally, the object of the invention is to provide a device of the character described that will be strong, durable and efficient, and simple and comparatively inexpensive to make.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists of the novel details of construction and operation, a preferable embodiment of which is described in the specilication and illustrated in the drawings, where- 1n Figure 1 is a top plan view of the central portion of a vehicle-body, showing my invention in place. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional View taken on the line X X of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a detailed front elevation of one of the hangers and a portion of one of the framebars.
In the drawings the numeral 1 designates the vehicle-body, which may be of any approved construction and upon which is built an ordinary seat-support, comprising the end blocks 2 and the frame-bars 3, which form a rectangular opening. A rectangular slatted bottom-plate 4 is supported at the lower end 'of the frame-bars by means of hangers 5, of which I preferably employ four, two being secured to the inner face of each of the framebars 3. The bottom A, acting in conjunction with the end blocks 2 and the frame-bar 3, produces a receptacle into which various articles may be placed, if desired. The hangers 5 are disposed a short distance from each end of the frame-bars 3 and are preferably U- shaped in form. They are secured in place by means of curved plates 6 and a nail, screw, or the like 7, which is passed centrally through the plate into the frame-bars 3, the plates 6 being curved to fit the contour of the hanger and the upper ends 8 thereof being outwardly curved to prevent the hanger from being disengaged from the plate. The lower ends of the hangers, which project slightly below the frame-bars 3, are formed with curved hook members 9 and are sprung inward, as shown in Fig. 2, so as to firmly engage with the Sides of the bottom 4:, which are preferably rounded. The wire from which the hanger is preferably formed has considerable elasticity, thus insuring a positive and firm engagement of the hook members with the bottom. It is apparent that by so supporting the bottom the same may be readily removed by forcing it upward and out of engagement with the hook members 9. It is also to be observed that when the bottom is in place it is so securely held by the hangers as to prevent rattling, as is the case where bottoms are screwed or nailed in place.
I do not wish to limit myself to the exact details of construction and operation herein set forth, as I may make various changes in the same without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The combination with the fixed framebars of a vehicle-seat support, of a removable bottom-plate for the support, and independent hangers secured to the frame-bars for supporting the bottom-plate in place.
2. The combination with a seat support frame, of a removable bottom-plate, and resilient hangers secured to the frame and supporting the bottom-plate.
WILLIAM B. C. HERSHEY.
In presence of- M. B. SoHLEY, A. L. PHELPS.
