DEVICE FOR BLUING CLOTHES.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 600,953, dated March 22 1898.

Application filed August 18, 1897. Serial No. 648,702. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that we, FRANCIS WILLIAM RABBI and ROBERT CHAMBERLAIN WEST- OVER LETT, of the city of Ottawa, in the county of Carleton, in the Province of Ontario, Canada, subjects of the Queen of Great Britain, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Bluing Clothes, of which the following is a specification.

Our invention relates to improvements in devices for bluing clothes; and the object of our invention is to provide a simple device by means of which clothes may be blued without any danger of overbluing them or getting foreign matter in the compound into the water; and it consists, essentially, of a tube provided with a piston-rod and plunger suitably held in such tube and means at the upper end of such tube for straining the diluted blue, as hereinafter more particularly described and claimed.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of our device as it appears when ready for use. Fig. 2 is a sectional View showing the construction of our device.

In the drawings like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in each figure.

A is the tube,'C the plunger, and B the piston-rod, which passes through a retainingplug D and is provided at its lower end with a suitable handle I).

d is a metal cap placed over the enlarged end of the retaining-plug D.

E is a hole in the retaining-plug D to allow any water that may get between the plug D Y and plunger C to escape.

F is packing around the plunger-head C to insure the latter fitting snugly the inside of the tube A and prevent, as near as possible, any water escaping below the plunger-head.

f f are rivet-washers, by means of which the piston-rod B is secured to the plungerhead C.

H is a strainer placed over the upper end of the tube A and rigidly held in position by means of the metal strap G. The metal strap G is adjustably secured to the tube A by means of the screw 9 passing through one of its ends it h and engaging screw-threads in the other end. By means of this device we can change the strainer when necessary.

J is a ring secured to the screw 9, by means of which our device can be hung up.

Having now described the principal parts involved in our invention, we shall describe its operation.

To place the bluing compound in our device, the plunger C and plug D are removed and the compound placed in the tube, when the above parts are replaced. The action of our device is like an ordinary syringe, and to draw water into it it is only necessary to place the end of the tube in the water and work the piston-rod B back and forth. This will introduce the Water into the tube, and such water will immediately mix with the bluing compound. When the operator thinks he has sufficient diluted blue in the tube, he presses on the rod B and forces the plunger C down, forcing the diluted blue through the strainer H into the water it is desired to blue. The strainer, we find, prevents'any possibility of lumps of bluing compound or any foreign matter that may be in the bluing compound from passing out of the tube and spoiling the color of the clothes. a

When the operator is finished with the device, it can be hung up by means of the ring J and the water mixed with the bluing compound will evaporate and leave the compound deposited in the tube.

In case any water should escape below the plunger C it is drained off by means of the hole E.

It will be seen that our device is yery' simple and effects a considerable saving in the bluing compound over the old way, where it was merely inclosed in a piece of cloth and squeezed by the hand.

A device for bluing clothes comprising an open-ended tube, a plug fitted in one end thereof having a guiding opening therein, a piston-rod guided in said opening, a pistonhead carried thereby, a strainer stretched 5 across the opposite end of said tube, and a split ring having clamping means for retainin g said strainer in place, substantially as described.

2. In a device of the class described in combination a tube, a strainer at the upper end of such tube, an adjustable metal strap for securing such strainer in place, a retainingplug' provided with a hole E, and a plungerhead secured to a piston-rod having a bearing in the retaining-plug, as set forth and for the IO purpose specified.
