SEWING-MACHINE ATTACHMENT.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 600,895, dated March 22, 1898.

Application filed October S0, 1896. Serial No. 610,578. (No model.)

To all whom it may con/cern:

Beit known that I, Conn F. SHELDoN,a citizen of the United States, residing at Hillsdale, in the county of Hillsdale and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sewing-Machine Attachments; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ofthe invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to improvements in sewing-machine attachments; and it consists of certain novel constructions, combinations, and arrangements of parts, all of which will be hereinafter more particularly set forth and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure l represents a rear elevation of a portion of a sewing-machine with my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 represents an enlarged detail perspective view of the device embodying my invention.

A in the drawings represents the back wall of the sewing-machine frame, and B my iinproved shelf or holder. The said holder B comprises a plurality of arms b b, provided along their lengths with securing-eyes h. The said arms are pivotally mounted one above the other upon a pivot-pin b2, the opposite ends of which are rigidly mounted in angular brackets h3, secured to the back of the sewingmachine by suitable screws that pass therethrough. The said arms are connected by a flexible web or netting b4, said netting being secured to said arms, respectively, by means of the eyes b. I contemplate constructing the arms of iron, with the eyes b formed integral therewith, and constructing the netting b4 of metallic links suitably joined together. I do not care to limit myself to this construction, as the arms may be made of wood and have the eyes h screwed into the saine, with a iiexible cord netting connecting the said arms. i

It will be observed from the foregoing description that when my device is applied to the rear of the sewing-machine it can be closed into a compact position under the sewing-machine When not in use, and when open forms an extended supporting-shelf upon which the article being sewed rests after passing over the top of the sewing-machine. rIhe said article is thus prevented from dropping down onto the floor and becoming soiled by the oil or dirt upon the foot-pedals.

This device is particularly useful where long ruffles or trimmings are being hemmed or plaited, as the sewed portion can be held clear of the machine and the iioor While the unsewed portion is being operated upon.

The device may be applied to any sewingmachine now in use by simply attaching the brackets b3 to the back of the sewing-machine in the desired position.

Any desired number of arms may be used, according to the character of the sewing-machine for which the device is intended.

When the device is not in use, it is altogether hidden from view under the rear of the sewing-machine, but can in stantly be brought into operative position by simply extending the pivoted arms.

I also contemplate employing a hook C, attached to the under side of the machine and adapted to engage an eye c, mounted upon the upper one of the supporting-arms, so that when the device is opened for use it will be prevented from being pushed away from the edge of the machine by any heavy material that may drop upon the same from the machine.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

l. In a sewing-machine attachment the combination witha plurality of supporting-arms, a pivoted pin passing through all of said arms, angular brackets supporting said pin and adapted to be connected to the sewing-niachine, and a flexible netting connecting the supporting-arms, substantially as described.
