ALONZO R. PETTIT, OF PATOHOGUE, NEW YORK.
CEASP OR FASTENING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 600,887, dated March 22, 1898.
Application filed December 1, 1896. Serial No. 614,103. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern: y
Be it known that I, ALONZO R. PETTIT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Patchogue, in the county of Suffolk and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clasps or Fastening Devices, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to clamps or fastening devices, and particularly to what are known as funis-clamps, for use in surgical operations; and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is simple in construction and operation and which may be quickly and easily applied and also quickly and easily removed whenever necessary.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved clamp or fastening device; Fig. 2, a side view thereof, and Fig. 3 a longitudinal central section.
In the drawings forming part of this specification the separate parts of my improvement are designated by the same numerals of reference throughout the several views, and in practice I provide a clamp or fastening device for the purpose herein specified which is composed of a single strip of spring metal bent centrally to form a spring end loop 5 and two straight spring-arms 6 and 7, which are adapted to be locked together at the free end thereof and which are held at a slight distance apart.
The spring-arm 6 is provided centrally on its inner side with a longitudinal groove 8, whereby a longitudinal rib 9 is formed on its upper side, and the spring-arm 7 is provided centrally of its inner side with a longitudinal rib 10, which corresponds with the longitudinal groove 8 in the arm 6 and operates in conjunction therewith, and a longitudinal groove 11 is formed in the outer side of the arm 7, which corresponds with the rib 10 on the inner side thereof. It will be understood, however, that the groove 8 and the rib 10 may be formed in the arm 6 and on the arm 7, respectively, and the free end of the arm is provided on its upper side with a transverse bead or head 12, and the free end of the arm 7 with a corresponding spring-hook 13, which is adapted to engage with said bead or head,
as clearly shown in Fig. 2, and to lock said spring-arms together. a
In practice the part to be fastened or secured is passed between the separate springarms of the fastening device and said arms are locked together, as shown in Fig. 2, and in this operation the part to be secured is securely clamped between said arms, as will also be readily understood, said part being forced into the groove 8 in the arm 6 by the rib lOon the arm 7, and said part will be securely held and closed. The construction of the locking device at the free end of said arms is an important feature, as the free end of the upper arm being turned backwardly to form a bead presents a beveled edge to the inwardly-directed end of the opposite arm, thereby rendering it very easy to be disengaged therefrom when desired.
This device is simple in construction and operation, and in practice I prefer to make the same of metal which will not corrode or be injuriously affected by fluids or acids.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent As an improved article of manufacture, a funis-clamp consisting of a narrow strip of non-corrodible spring metal which is bent centrally to form a loop and two straight springarms adapted to be locked together, said arms being at a slight distance apart, one of said arms being provided centrally on its side with a longitudinal groove, and the other arm being provided with a corresponding longitudinal rib adapted to operate with the said longitudinal groove when the arms are locked together, one of said arms being provided at the free end thereof with an upwardly-directed bead formed by returning the end of the strip upon itself and the free end of the opposite arm being provided with a corresponding spring -hook, the end of which is turned backwardly upon itself, said hook being adapted to engage said bead, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 27th day of November, 1896.
ALONZO R. PETTIT.
