dJZEi/QA,
A TTOIINEYJ' JOHN EVANS, OF ERVV'OOD, ENGLAND.
SCAFFOLD-CLAM P.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 600,860, dated March 22, 1898.
Application filed July 31, 1897. Serial No. 646,611. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN EVANS, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Erwood, in the county of Brecon, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scaffold-Clamps, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to scaifold-clamps; and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which may be suspended from a pole or other support and from which boards, poles, or similar articles may be suspended.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which Figure 1 is a side view of my improved clamp; Fig. 2, a view at right angles thereto, looking in the direction of the arrow 01 in Fig. 1; and Fig. 3, a view similar to Fig. 1, showing a modified form of construction.
In the drawings forming part of this specification the separate parts of my improvement are designated by the same letters of reference in each of the views, and in the practice of my invention I provide a clamp for the purpose herein specified, reference being made to Fig. 1, which consists of two circular or segmental jaws A and B, the first of which is much longer than the other, and said jaws are provided with shanks a and b, respectively, which are pivotally connected at O, and the outer end of the jaw A is provided with an eye D, which is adapted to receive a hook E, formed on the jaw B.
The shank a is provided with an inclined flat end a, in which is formed a hole or opening a and the shank b is provided with an arm 5 which projects at right angles thereto, and the said arm b is preferably provided on its upper side with teeth or projections b and similar teeth or projections 17 are preferably formed on the side of the shank B, adjacent thereto, the object of these teeth or projections being to assist in holding a board, pole,
.bar, or other article on the arm 6 Passing through the jaw B is a set-screw G, provided with a cross-head or handle g, and the object of the set-screw G is to secure the clamp to the pole or other article with which the clamp is connected.
It will be understood that the clamp is adapted to be suspended from a scaffold-pole, and the weight of the load suspended by the arm 79 serves to more securely lock the jaws A and B together, and the object of the hole or opening a in the end of the jaw A is to provide means for suspending other clamps therefrom, said other clamps being connected by means of a chain or link with the end of the shank a, as will be readily understood.
The jaw A is provided on its inner side with teeth or projections H, so as to enable the clamp to be more securely locked to a scaffold-pole, and in Fig. 3 Ihave shown a modified form of construction, in which the jaws A and B are angular in form and adapted to be connected with a pole or other support which is angular in cross-section, and otherwise this form of construction may be the same as that hereinbefore described, and the jaw B may also be provided with teeth.
My improvement is simple in construction and operation and perfectly adapted to accomplish the result for which it is intended, and it will be apparent that changes in and -m0difications of the construction herein described may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, I
projects at right angles thereto, one of said jaws being provided with an eye or opening at the end thereof, and the other with a hook which is adapted to pass therethrough, sub stantially as shown and described.
2. A clamp for the purpose herein described,
said clamp consisting of two jaws, each of which is provided with a shank, said shanks being pivotally connected, and one of said shanks being provided with an arm which projects at right angles thereto, one of said jaws being provided with an eye or opening at the end thereof, and the other with a hook which is adapted to pass therethrough, one of said jaws being also provided with a setsorew which passes therethrongh, substantially as shown and described.
3. A clamp for the purpose herein described, said clamp consisting of two jaws, each of which is provided with a shank, said shanks being pivotally connected, and one of said shanks being provided with an arm which projects at right angles thereto, one of said jaws being provided with an eye or opening at the end thereof, and the other with a hook which is adapted to pass therethrongh, one
of said jaws being also provided with a set- I 5 screw which passes therethrongh, and the shank of one of said jaws being also provided with a hole or opening in one end thereof,
JOHN EVANS.
