HORACE B. FRAZIER, OF SIXLOUIS, MISSOURI.
PUNCHlNG-BAG.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 600,777, dated March 15, 1898. Application filed Tune 7, 1897. Serial No. 639,700. (No model.)
To ctZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, HORACE B. FRAZIEP., of the city of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pneumatic Punching-Bags, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.
My invention relates to pneumatic punching-bags; and it consists of the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter shown, described, and claimed.
Figure 1 is a top plan View, parts being broken `away to more clearly illustrate the construction. Fig. 2 is a central section taken, approximately, on theline 2 2of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a View analogous to Fig. 2 and showinga modified construction, parts being broken away to economize space. l
Referring by numerals to the accompanying drawings, the outer casing 4 is constructed of sections of leather 5, said sections being cut in such shape that when sewed together by the stitching 6 a casing is constructed which is circular in plan and elliptical in elevation or vertical section. The points of the sections 5 are cut away at each end, thus producing the circular openings 7 and 8in the casing. The circular opening 7 is closed by the button 9, consisting of the cap 10 and the eyelet 11, securely locked together byinserting the end 12 of the eyelet into the annular flange 13 of the cap. The inner end of the eyelet is a great deal larger than the end 12 and is placed in position against the inner face 0f the casing, with the end 12 projecting outwardly through the casing. The cap 10 is placed in position against the outer face of the casing, with the end 12 of the eyelet inserted into the annular flange 13,projecting inwardly from the cap. The tool is then insertedinto the casing through the opening 8 and placed against the eyelet, and the cap 10 is hammered securely into position, thus forming a secure binding for the edges of the casing around the opening 7. The large eyelet 14 is placed in the opening 8, as required to form a secure binding for the edges of the sections 5 around said opening. The central portion of the eyelet 14 is turned outwardly, as shown in Fig. 2.
The opening 8 is closed by the concavo-convex perforated disk 15, said disk being considerably larger than said opening and curved to correspond to the curvature of the casing 4. An elastic inflatable sack 16 is placed in the casing 4, and the flexible tube 17 extends from said sack outwardly through a central opening in the disk l5` and serves as a means of iniiating and deating the sack 16. The metallic loop 18 has its ends attached to the disk 15 upon opposite sides 0f the central opening in said disk, and the central portion of said loop extends outwardly through the opening 8 and serves as a means of attaching the punching-bag to its support. By this construction I do away with the necessity of using laces, all parts ofthe casing 4 being secured rigidly and permanently together.
In the modification shown in Fig. 3 I omit the eyelet 14. The metallic ring 19is placed inside of the casing and adjacent to the opening 8, and the edge 20 of the casing 4 is turned inwardly around the ring 19 and secured to itself by the stitching 21, thus making a very secure binding around the opening 8.
I claim- 1. In a punching-bag, an outer casingcoustructed with an opening, a concavo-convex disk located within said casing and designed to close said opening, said concavo-convex disk having a small central opening, an iniiatable sack located within said casing and having a tube extending through the central opening in said concavo-convex disk and suitable means of attaching to said concave-convex disk, substantially as specified.
2. In a punching-bag, an outer casing constructed with an opening, a concavo-convex disk located within said casing and designed to close said opening, said concavo-convex disk having a small central opening, an inilatable sack located within said casing and having a tube extending through the central opening in said concavo-convex disk, and a metallic loop having its ends rigidly attached to said concave-convex disk and its central portion extending outwardly through said opening, substantially as specified.
3. In a punching-bag, the outer casing `4 constructed of the leather sections 5, said sections being cut away at each end, thus producing the circular openings 7 and 8, the but- IOO ton 9 closing the opening 7; said button conto support the punching-bag, substantially as ro sisting of the cap 10 and the eyelct ll securely specified. locked together by inserting the end 12 of the ln testimony whereof I affix my signature eyelet into the annular ange 13 of the cap; in presence of two Witnesses.
5 an iniiatable sack located Within said casing,
a concavo-convex disk located Within said cas- HORACE B' FRAZIER' ing, said disk being large enough to closethe Witnesses: opening 8 and hold said sack in position, and A. J. MCCAULEY, means of attaching to said disk as required S. G. WELLS.
