PIPE-WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 600,494, dated March 8, 1898. Application filed September 29, 1897. Serial No. 653,426. (No model.)
To ctZZ whom, it may concern.-
Be itknown that I, OAMILLO KRAMER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Albany, in the county of Albany and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipe-\Vrenches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Theinvention consists of an improved pipewrench, the jaw of which is of peculiar form and construction and the operating lever or handle pivoted to the jaw at the lower curved end of the lever and to one side of the jaw.
The objects of the invention are to produce a wrench that is simple and cheap of construction and to make it thorough and effective in use and that is adapted for use with a number of different sizes of pipe without adj ustment therefor.
I will now proceed to describe the invention in such full, clear, concise, and exact terms that any person familiar with the art may make and'use the same.
Referring to the drawings forming a part of this specification, and on which like reference-letters indicate corresponding parts,Figure 1 is a perspective view of the wrench, and Fig. 2 is a like view showing in full and dot ted lines its application to pipes or tubes of different sizes.
A is the lever or handle, and B is the jaw. The jaw B is substantially U-shaped; but it is so pivoted to the curved lower end of the lever A that the point drops downward, thus making the opening in the jaw substantially triangular, a form that is very desirable for giving a firm grip on a tube or other article without in j ury thereto. The heel of the jawis bifurcated or slitted vertically, as at b,and this bifurcation extends for some distance across the base of the jaw, as shown. The tongue or point of the jaw Z) is also slitted or bifurcated vertically a suitable distance, and these slits or bifurcations, in connection with the peculiar form of the jaw itself and the curved lever or handle, adapt the wrench for use on different-sized pipes or tubes by simple pressure on the lever.
The extreme end of the point or tongue of the lower jaw B is toothed or serrated on its top surface and is preferably of curved form, so that it may be used on a pipe 0 which is close to a wall or other obstruction, and in this instance it will be observed that the wrench engages only two points on the pipeviz., the point resting against the lower curved side of the lever and the point or end of the jaw. (See Fig. l.) The jaw B has also a hole or aperture at its heel end for the lever-pivot a.
The lever A is of curved or scroll form, its prominent curve being at its lower end. The under or convex portion of the lever at this point is toothed, serrated, or roughened to form a firmer gripping-surface. The lever is pivoted at its curved lower end to the jaw B between the bifurcated heel portion, as shown at a.
It will be seen from the peculiar form of the lower jaw and the lever connected therewith, as described, that the pivot is directly opposite the extreme point of the jaw, thus forming a substantially triangular opening, so that when the the wrench is used, as shown in Fig. 2, it will form a triangular grip-that is to say, at two points against the smooth inside surfaces of the jaw and the third point against the curved lower portion of the lever.
The wrench is thus capable of use in two ways, as shown in the two views of the drawingsthat is to say, in the one instance by gripping the article between the end of the tongue or point of the jaw and the lower curved part of the lever and in the second instance by gripping it at three points, as has been already explained. In the latter instance the wrench may be used on a pipe or tube that is of the diameter of the opening in the jaw B or of any smaller diameter, since the curved lower end of the lever will project through the slot or bifurcation in the heel of the jaw or smaller pipes or tubes, and in case of quite small ones the handle of the lever as it is pressed down to get a grip on such small tube or pipe will be received in the slotted end of the point or tongue of the jaw.
1 have described the convex lower ends of the lever and also the tongue of the jaw as serrated or roughened, and I prefer this construction but for some purposes this feature is not essential and the parts referred to may be plain surfaces.
The operation of the wrench will be clear from the foregoing description and need not be further explained. It will be seen, however, that the lever performs a double function in use, viz: It will not only grip the pipe when pressed down, but will at the same time draw up the jaw toward the pipe and lever, thereby forming a very firmand equal grip.
The invention is simple in construction and use and requires no adjustment by means of screws or other means to apply and release it or to adapt it to different-sized pipes.
Having thus fully described the invention, what I claim is 1. A pipe-wrench comprising a jaw with a base, a bifurcated heel portion and a bifurcated tongue or point, the inner surface of said jaw between the heel and point being substantially triangular, and a lever or handle with a convex lower side pivoted at its extreme end in the bifurcation in the heel of the'jaw, substantially as described.
2. A pipe-wrench comprising a jaw having a base a heel portion and a tongue or point, substantially as described, with an opening between said heel and tongue to receive a pipe or tube, the said tongue having a curved and serrated or roughened top port-ion, in combination with a curved lever which is pivoted at its extreme end to the heel of the jaw and corrugated or roughened on its lower convex surface, substantially as described.
