Be it known that I, YEWELL D. SCALES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Springfield, in the county of Sangamon and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Necktie-Fasteners; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to that class of necktie-fasteners which are formed of a single piece of wire having a central eye to engage the collar-button and extensions of said wire upon each side, to which the made-up bow or other tie may be attached; and my improvement consists in a new method of forming such extensions, so as to provide for securing the tie iirmlyin its proper position on the collar and preventits displacement either upwardly, downwardly, or laterally and whether such tie is provided with a neck-band of any kind or not.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a rear view of a made-up bow necktie having one form of my device attached to it. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing another form of the fastener and a different method of attaching it to the tie.

The fastener, as shown in Fig. l, is formed of a single piece of wire of elastic quality, preferably of gold, silver, aluminium, brass, or other non-corroding material. At the central point in the length of Wire employed an eye A is formed, somewhat smaller than the head of an ordinary collar-button, with an opening, preferably at the bottom, to admit the shank of such button. The extensions upon each side are then formed, consisting of the substantially horizontal portions B B, the upwardly-extending portions C C, and the downwardly-extending portions D D, forming loops or stays E E, and the terminal portions F F. This form of the fastener is secured to the tie by stitching the two together at b h and ff or other suitable points.

In the form of the fastener shown in Fig. 2 further extensions G G are added, bending downwardly from the portions F toward and 4 5o across the portions B and pointed at their ends, so as to form spring-pins, which may be passed through the material of the tie at as many places as desired to secure the fastener in place thereon. Spiral turns b are formed in the wires B to serve as catches or clasps to receive the points of the spring-pins G and prevent their disengagement from the material. The advantage of this form of the fastener is that it requires no stitching and can easily be detached or transferred from one tie to another.

The fasteners described are specially de-V signed for use in connection with so-called standing collars which are detachable from the shirt, though they may also be used with those not detachable or with turn-over collars, whether detachable or not. In the iirst-mentioned case, the collar being in position on the shirt and buttoned on the collarbutton, the eye of the fastener is iirst passed over the button and then by slightly tilting the fastener in either direction the loops E E are alternately inserted under the collar and between it and the neckband of the shirt, the elastic quality of the wire permitting these adjustments to be made without permanent distortion of the fastener. The lower edge of the collar is thus made to lie in the space between the bends D and F, the loops E being behind the collar and between it and the neckband of the shirt, as stated.

In forming the fastener in order to properly accommodate the edge of the collar the portions D and F should be prolonged downwardly toward the extension B far enough to bring the bend joining said portions D and F, when in normal position on the shirt, below the level of the center of the button-loop or the seat of the shank of the button.

In either form of the device an absolutely secure adjustment of the tie on the collar is provided for, any downward or lateral displacement being prevented by the engagement of the eye A with the collar-button and upward displacement by the hold of the loops E under and behind the collar. When used in connection with detachable turnover collars, the fastener may be adjusted by disposing the loops E behind the neckband of the collar, as above described in the case of standing collars, or by simply placing them under'the turn-over.' portion of 'the'coll'arL Though'designed specially for standing collars the fastener is thus adaptable to any. 5 is also equally applicable and useful whether the tie is provided with a neckband of the material to go around the-neck andfastenat the back or not.
